Is there a specific hose for p/s fluid or will heater hose work?
(the hose from the remote reservior on the fender to the p/s pump,68 BB)

It is a special type hose, shouldn't be hard to find it was used on trucks with BB engines until the late 80's maybe even longer. Heater hose will swell up it is not made for oil.

It's a specific type of hose, even the return hose. If it is the return line, you can buy it by the foot at most auto parts stores. Some sell it in 3 ft lengths too.

Thanks.
I used heater hose and it seemed like the hose was sweating with condensation. It was the oil seeping through. Then it leaked at the clamp too.

Jerry, fluid wicks thru the heater hose, I found that out the hard way graemlins/angry.gif James Hinshaw has the right stuff.

You can also try a hydraulic shop for the hose if you can't find it locally in that size. Or a big rig shop/dealer.

Our sponsor www.ss396.com (http://www.ss396.com) sells the correct hose too. I tried the heater hose deal too graemlins/clonk.gif

I found one at TC a few years back at Hinshaws booth. Had one there at the show!

Sorry, I was thinking '69, which has a 3/8" return hose. Sounds like the remote reservoirs have a larger dia hose that's harder to find.

They sell it by the foot at Auto Zone.

Also at NAPA, in various I.D.'s. Just ask for bulk hydraulic hose, like to use for transmission lines (if the counter person is as dense as the kid I had to deal with the other day).

My Napa didn't carry that large of a diameter hose. I went to a hyrdraulic hose shop. The hose they gave me has steel in the center of the core. It doesn't swell of leak.

If you are looking for the correct hose the "by-the-foot" hose won't work. There is a molded 90 degree bend abot 3-5 inches below the resevior.
Resto companies carry it:

www.true-connections.com (http://www.true-connections.com)
www.yearone.com (http://www.yearone.com)

etc,etc, etc :D

There are typically two different sizes of remote reservoir hoses. The most common type has a 5/8 inch inside diameter. When the return flow from the gear comes back to the remote reservoir, then the system requires all of the flow to transfer from the remote reservoir down to the pump. So a large diameter, low restriction hose is required.

Some power steering systems have the flow from the gear coming directly back to a small 3/8 inch spout on the back of the pump. There is a remote reservoir only for easy access for filling the system. Those systems can get away with a 1/2 inch ID (or possibly 3/8 inch ID?) hose from the reservoir to the pump because the reservoir and hose are only acting like a stand pipe with no oil flow.

BTW, you want systems with 5/8 hose to have the reservoir as close to the pump as practical. Long lengths of 5/8 feed hose can restrict flow to the pump and cause noise and airation of the fluid.

You always want to use hose rated for hydraulic use. Never heater and/or engine coolant hose.

I think the hose is 3/4" ID, from reservoir to pump... There is still a 3/8" return from the box to the pump...

The "by-the-foot" bulk hose will work, if you can find it for Hydraulic fluid.

The stock hose has a molded bend, but there's nothing mounted in the way to require that sharp molded bend that the stocker has... Repro might look a little better though...

Thanks again everyone.
I think I'll try to use a by the foot hydraulic hose from a local place, since the by the foot heater hose fit just fine.
If I'm unable to locate it locally I'll get it from one of the resto places. Thanks, now if I have to do that I'll have to order more stuff with it to make the order worth it. :D

The hose you want to use is GM #1485552. It is still available through your GM dealer or through http://www.gmpartsdirect.com

FYI this hose is included in the ZZ502/502 crate motor. Maybe someone out there is not going to use theirs ?

How long is the GM or repro piece with the 90 deg bend? Since installing the procharger I had to switch to a small power steering pump with remote reservoir. The reservoir is mounted on the radiator support, just need to know if it will reach. (By the way, also tried the heater hose)
Thanks

Why would the 502 come with a power steering hose? Are you sure that they aren't talking about the heater bypass hose?

The hose is approx. 21 1/2" in length. On my '68 {with the remote ps reservoir} the hose had to be trimmed on both ends to get the fit I was looking for.

Jeff, you are correct. It is labeled for use as a Hose, Thermo Bypass for the Deluxe Engine 12371171 . Apparently, much of the hose would be discarded. graemlins/clonk.gif

Thanks for the measurement, it should just reach. I ordered one from GMpartsdirect. I tried every auto store in the area, they looked at me like I had corn growing out of my ears when I explained what I wanted.

I installed that OPG hose in November, and it seeps just like the heater hose. I called OPG to see if I could get another one under warranty, and they no longer carry it 'cause it leaks!!
They did give me my money back (or at least they said they did--I'll know when the VISA bill comes in). :D
