after reading through a few posts, i've decided to try my hand at painting my car in my garage. The color i'm going with is 1992 Toyota burgandy mica. I have no idea if this is an enamel, laquer, clear/base. After all the dents and dings are fixed, car scuffed and cleaned, what is the order of shooting the primer and paint? I'm guessing an etching primer, let it dry then sand? once it's smooth then shoot it with a sealing primer? Keep in mind i'm a wrench turning, not a body guy, but i love saying i did it all myself even if it's not perfect. Hopefully one of you pros can help me on the proper spraying/sanding order and paint/primer compatability.

BTW winter is fast approaching, what is the minimun temp. for spraying? i have a fan forced heater in the garage that brings the temps up nicely. Obviously i wouldn't run it while painting, i don't feel like blowing myself up! lol I'd just rather not wait until spring to paint it (March, April)

Thanks!!!!!!!!!

there are many books on painting that would be very helpful, they also have alot pictures.i just painted my second car.my first car was painted at a technical school.i took the night class so i could use their tools and paint booth while i worked on my car. the instructor was there if i needed help.i painted my second car in my garage it came out good but had more trash in it,alot of work to get out.i wish i had went back tech school, after i bought the materials to build paint booth it would have paid for the class.i dont think i could have painted the first car on my own without someone looking over my shoulder giving their advice and experience. good luck

Lots of good stuff in the archives, too -- use the search function. Also check out www.autobodystore.com (http://www.autobodystore.com)

You'll be glad you did. Good stuff, good prices... and lots of helpful folks to answer your questions.

Cheers,
mark.

Try www.paintucation.com (http://www.paintucation.com)

Safety should be your first concern. No spark sources (water heater, ventilator) in the garage?

Also, modern paints with hardeners include ISOCYANATES which can kill you! A respirator is not enough to protect you from them. That was the main reason that I used enamel w/o hardener to paint my Monte (no ISOs). Not a show paint job, but respectable for a driver. Also, I want to actually DRIVE the car without being concerned about a $5000 show-quality paint.

I have painted several cars in my garage. I'm working on my wife's 87 Monte carlo SS now, I hope to paint it friday. One thing I have learned, the more time you spend blocking the primer the better the paint job will be. My work is not show quality, but good for a driver. If it was any better I wouldn't want to drive it to Walmart. There is alot of good info on this site, I have found answers in the archives myself.

On a side-note. I think it's better to spray paint when it's cold. No bugs to worry about. Most stuff now has accelerators that make the paint dry faster anyways.
