So my high from finally getting my Serp System put together just came down to a crashing halt. I filled my power steering pump last night to make sure there were no leaks in the pump body...and guess what...I have a nice puddle of power steering fluid on my garage floor (damn junk parts!). So my question now is what's the best way to go? Can I have my pump rebuilt? Is that even a good option? Do I just go out and burn...I mean spend...some more money on another pump? Not happy right now!

You can get a pump rebuild kit that includes a new pump seal. Looks like you could do it yourself.

I noticed that Jegs and Summit both carry generic brand versions of the Saginaw pump for about $100. Do you guys think these are worth it?
I also noticed that my local PepBoys has a generic pump for $75...can I go wrong for that price? I think 3 hours of my time (to rebuild the pump) is worth more than the $65 bucks I'll save by doing the rebuild myself. What do you guys think?

Ok...I'm having one of those "is it my own dumba$$ fault?" moments. I removed the nuts from the mounting studs on the back side of the powersteering pump thinking that all they did was hold in place this other bracket that I did not need. I never did tighten those nuts back down on the studs. Do these nuts seal the reservoir housing to the pump?

sorry posted back but changed it graemlins/clonk.gif I am not sure what pump you have and did not want to give false info...on the later stuff the stud and bolt being loose will cause a leak..

Of course this means I have to pull the pulley off...in order to pull the pump off...in order to get to the damn nut! I guess it's all part of learning my lesson...you better believe I'm going to test that thing for leaks before putting that pully back on.

Borrow the puller from autozone if you dont have one..Reinstall with a bolt, heavy washer and a nut..

Those bolts may also have a flat cut o-ring under them.

Inside the pump between the pump housing and the reservoir there are square cut or o-rings sitting in grooves in the housing. Tightening the studs press the reservoir against the housing, trapping the o-rings and sealing the area.
