Hi all;
I see since this site instantly logged me in that my boyfriend uses this site, so I'll just post this using his handle. I have a paint problem I need help with. The center of his SS steering wheel is painted with a black paint that looks like textured vinyl when dry. I have a picture if anyone needs to see it I can mail it to them. I've seen it on many Chevy steering wheels from that era. I need to repaint it as a good portion of it is gone. The metal is perfectly flat underneath so I know the paint does all the textured vinyl work. Can anyone help? For a photo email me at "Dpeppin@kc.rr.com"
(P.S.) I'm also looking for the paint used for the chrome headlight rings on a 72 Chevelle. some have it, some don't. THANKS ALL :D

It's a spraying technique and it will work with any two-part enamel. Lacquer dries too fast and one part enamels such as Rustoleum dry too slowly. Reduce the paint (black semi gloss in this case) normally and apply a base coat. Now mix some of the paint with little or no reducer, cut the air pressure way back on the gun until it just barely atomizes the paint and spray a light second coat for texture. The paint should "sputter" out of the gun if the pressure is right. A pressure feed gun is best, but a texture can be achieved using a siphon feed gun with a bit of practice.

Practice on some scraps before trying the real thing, it may take a few tries to get it right.

Black paint was used on the SS headlight rings. Any semi gloss paint will work, you could use the same paint as you used for the steering wheel center.
