5500 would be the correct factory tach.
6500 was on the 375 HP option

If you do a search, you'll find that this subject has been covered in depth.

No 6500 redline tach in 1969.
Some people have had theirs restored to show a 6500 redline, but I've never seen an original car with a 6500 redline. I believe that people do this because the 1970 Chevelle LS6 had a 6500 redline and they mimick that for some reason ??

1969 Chevelles:
307/350 cars with tach option had a 5000 redline
396/325hp and 350hp were 5500 redline
375hp was 6000 redline

Nate nailed it on the head. Any L78's (375hp/396) that were purchased with the tach and gauge option had a 6000 redline tach.

Our COPO Chevelle has the 6000 redline. Some claim that a few L78s came with a 6500 redline. I've seen one '69 Chevelle equipped that way. The car had been restored and hopefully it was done accurately. Unless you are the original owner, you can never be absolutely sure of anything. Then again us old guys don't have such good memories either. With stock valve springs they weren't safe over 6K any way. That's when valves start to drop and is probably the number one reason that there are so few original engine L78 cars.

I DO remember many L-78 and even L-34 cars back then ('66-'69) being in for major engine warranty work at one time or another. Usually 4 speeds and the problem usually was a dropped valve.
