Just got some new GM door handles, my old ones were pretty scratched up. Never replaced door handles before. Can anybody offer some instructions?

I put two new door handles on my '71 Chevelle over the summer. I would suggest first getting the correct tool for taking off the clips that hold the window crank and the inside door lever. You can bang them off with a screw driver, but it's a real pain to try and get them back on without the right tool. Also, once you get inside the door to take off the nuts from the outside door handle, it's a pretty tight squeeze for your hands. I had to have my 15 yr. old daughter help me. I held the new door handle in place on the outside, while she put the nuts on inside the door. Her hand was small enough to do this, mine wasn't.

And you're going to have to cut the length of the rod on the push button. Be careful doing this. Take off the old one and measure the length to the new one, then cut it. Then you need to bend the rod to match the old one. And if it breaks after you've cut the length, then it will be to short and you won't be able to use it. Good Luck

Did you remember to order new door handle gaskets?

The special tool for use on the inside door handle and window crank is for the removal operation only. No tool is necessary for reinstallation. It's just a push-on deal once the horseshoe clip is in place.
