I'm sanding the bad spots on my 71 Malibu, mist green, and I have a few spots of bare metal showing. I plan on using PPG's base/ clear paint when I finally paint. My question is, what part# and color of primer should I get? Do I need etching primer? Do I need to thin the primer before I shoot it, and can I just shoot the bare spots, then prime the rest of the car, and then paint, or should I sand the car all the way down? Sorry for all the questions, but I want to do it right. Thanks, Stan71

Stan, 1st thing and most important thing for a quality paint job is the adhearance of the paint to the metal. If you prime or paint over rust, IT WILL come back to haunt you. After removing ALL of the rust, etch the bare surface with 120 grit paper. Then use an self-etching primer OR use a metal-etch acid prep on the metal (follow directions)and spray with a GOOD quality (not spray-bombs) primer surfacer. But don't do both. One or the other. Then spray a good quality urethane primer. Don't use laquer or enamel primers.

Stan,

I just finished my 72 El Camino using PPG BC/CC. I would suggest you sand the car all the way to bare metal, then spray PPG DP50 (grey). Follow that with the necessary body work, then spray PPG NCP270 (grey primer surfacer) and block sand.

Good Luck,
