Does anyone know of any places that sell a manual steering pitman arm? I spent an hour and a half searching for one on the net this morning and came up with nothing.

A little back story, since we're setting my 68 up to be primarily drag car, I decided to switch to manual steering so I can be rid of any belts that could be thrown during a pass down the track (2 gell cell batteries in the trunk, switched to an electric water pump). Well, in my "infinite wisdom" I ordered a manual steering box but didn't think of the pitman arms being different (I realized this after switching the boxes on the car) But it seems as though noone makes a manual pitman arm for our cars anymore.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Since it is not a wear part it is a collision part. Most likely discontinued, at least that is what I've found on '67 and earlier. So I went to a steering gearbox rebuilder and looked through several barrels full of old pitman arms - found one. You might also try some of the auto parts swap meets, I've had some luck there too.

I just got one from these guys;

The one I got was in VERY good condition and appeared to be sand blasted.

Have you tried using the pitman arm that came off of your power steering box? That is what I have done on my 72. Works just fine.

So how much of your original 68 Big Block power steering set up, do you have left ?

My story is that my engine currently has a long water pump, and incorrect brackets, and pulleys too.

I was going to switch to manual steering in part because it would save me the expense of correct pump, and resevoir and to at least make my car look correct.

Chevelle4321, The splined hole on the pitman arm is larger than the shaft on the manual box (I don't see why GM did this??)

Thad, I'm planning on keeping the power steering stuff so later when I get a little older (in middle of college right now, working on a budget) I want to build a streetable large cube motor (maybe with forced induction) and convert the car back to power steering.

Uppster, didn't think of that, I'll have to call my GM dealer and see what they can get, they found me a new set of chevelle motor mounts before, so I guess they may be able to find me a pitman arm.

Thanks alot everyone!
