: Black OR White Racing Stripes??
Cable Dec 4th, 02, 5:42 PM Hey guys, as some of you know I am painting my '70 El Camino a dark "redfire" metallic w/the correct '70 SS stripes on the hood. The paint is a 2003 Grand Prix Color, I'll have a blue peral/clear added over everything. That way it will be my own color.
I thought that I was going to paint the stripes black. But someone suggested that white would be cool too. Now it has me thinking......which would look cooler?
The car will be painted the dark "redfire" metallic, then the stripes (whatever the color) will be painted on, then block sanded to remove the feeling of the stripes, then painted with several coats of blue metallic pearl/clear coat.
You guys can see the "redfire" color here: http://www.pontiac.com/pontiacjsp/grandprix/colors.jsp?source=lnav
Then click on the "redfire" button to see the color.
Thanks guys.

Cable Dec 4th, 02, 7:06 PM Thanks for the replies guys. I am know sure what I am going for with the stripes.
White will most definity stand out more. But black has a "ghost" look to it with the dark color.
Keep them coming guys!!

RacnJsn95 Dec 4th, 02, 8:20 PM I think the Victory Red looks better... But I would make the stripes either black, or a Little bit lighter red would be cool.
sevt_chevelle Dec 4th, 02, 8:31 PM I would go with the white strips, everybody and their brother has a red with black chevelle. But my suggestion is I would first paint the stripe color on some scrap first, then apply your blue pearl. You mentioned that you will be painting the stripe then going with the blue pearl on top of that, you may not like the color of the stripe once you put that blue pearl on it. So if you painted it on some scrap you know what color you will get. Also remember the more coats of pearl you add the darker the color gets...Eric

I like the "victory red" too, but 65% of Elco's have the glossy red.
I like red, but wanted something a bit different than the rest.

I've been thinking about doing the same thing to my 70, and I've decided on the white stripes. Here are a couple pics to whet your whistle!

Thanks

Nick, sorry, no clue. I was just surfing the web a few weeks back looking for that car/stripe color combo and that was one of the pics that I found that was closest to my car's color...

I haven't painted the car yet, right now its still wearing primer.
My interior is tan (saddle). It too is currently out of the car. I planned on ProCar "Elite" Tan buckets, stock replacement door panels, newer style tan headliner, and tan carpet. The dash is the stock color too, except the gauge area will be a custom piece.

I plan on the "ghost effect" when I paint my 70 Chevelle. I won't pass it off as a clone (skipping the dash & badges), but I think the white stripes screams "SS".
My color scheme is a 70 era dark green, and green-ish black or a primer black color for the SS stripes, with a break in the outline. Kinda like a "Z" wiggle that descends into the base of the stripe.
I want the, "Oh, did you notice it is slightly different than the traditional SS stripe, since it's not an SS" kinda thing.
I vote for non-contrasting stripes!
