All the info I have been reading on shrinking says to heat to "cherry red"
I have seen cherries (the fruit) all different reds.
Is this when the metal first starts turnning red or is it just before a puddle starts to form, etc..???

Cherry red....glowing red I do believe. Why it's called cherry red is beyond me. graemlins/clonk.gif

If it's glowing it's hot enough

Thanks Kevin, that's what I was wondering. Guess I was overheating the test (practice) fender, I actually had some scale appear when I let it air cool after giving it a few god whacks, the old tester isn't the cleanest though!
Anybody else? As as soon as I see red?

Cherry Red, It's not rocket science, use a little common since I'm sure you will be OK. Hint.. if it turns White and the metal starts to flow you have gone toooooooooooooo far.

IMO chery red is too far. Once the metal has turned blue is good. If you read/watch Ron Covell books movies he goes til its blueish. Ron Fronier(sp?) also goes blueish.
Both Guys are TOP NOTCH metal workers some of the finest.
Shrinking metal will work MUCH MUCH better if BOTH sides are clean and bare metal.

Sounds good I guess I need to watch Ron Covell's Basics video again. I am going to his basic steel workshop in Oregon on April 2nd I hope I can talk the boss into paying for it!!!

Am seeing Ron here in KC in April. He's doing the custom grille lecture. Really looking forward to going...Eric
