Has anyone done this mod where you replace the Power Steering Gear box with a unit from a Chevy 96-2002 S10 sports Truck. The Monte Marlo Gear box from the 84-87 SS is a nice unit but, the S10 Truck has a better ratio? What hose adapters
needed?
Dave.

Dave,
Do a search in the brakes and susension forum. Plenty of discussion there for months of reading (especially from our own resident engineer JimL82 from the Saginaw steering division graemlins/thumbsup.gif ).

The Monte Marlo Gear box from the 84-87 SS is a nice unit but, the S10 Truck has a better ratio? Not sure what box the S10 uses off-hand, but the Monte Box is a bolt-in (its really the same box as the Chevelle, just some newer upgrades like different hose fittings, different input shaft spline size and the better ratio.

The 12.7:1 is the quickest ratio available with these boxes, thats what the Monte SS has, as well as some other models... So if the S10 uses the same box, it will not be a quicker box (likely slower for the truck).

I will second using JimL82's info, but try here also (its the tech reference section).

Jim also recommended to try here for the updated info:

I just read an article on this.
The S-10 steering gear is a direct bolt in.
But you will need to buy a steering coupler.
My magazine article had the GM part Number listed.
I will try and post the part number and will also give refeernce to which magazine it was in.
I believe it was one of the CHEVELLE editions put out by Super Chevy.

doesn't it use a rag joint from an early 80's fullsize pickup to match the old column to the new box? i also think flare adapters are available to use the stock pressure line in the newer box, as well.

Not sure where your at in IL but there's a
shop on Archer Ave. in Chicago that rebuilds
& sells S-10 steering gears, there are 3 differant ratio's & I know at least 5 people
that have done it & are happy with outcome.
If you want me to get name of shop let me know.

The ZQ8 steering box of which you speak of has a 12.7:1 ratio. It is put in 96-02(?) F-bodys, and (some) s-10s, possibly others. Other boxes with the 12.7 ratio are the WS, and XH boxes (90-92 F-body). Now I'm interested in this swap... I see some ZQ8 boxes on ebay at around 60-120 dollars.

i thought all 93 and newer Camaros and Firebirds had rack and pinion steering. might be the same box as a 94-96 Impala SS or cop car.
