: Looking at a 65SS, need opinions
ccarney69 Mar 26th, 04, 12:09 AM I looked at a 65 SS Malibu yesterday, the guy wants $5000. Its stored outside under a tarp. Car looks very original. EE on the engine pad. Its a 327 powerglide with a 4V carb. Its an A/C, P/S and P/B car. Floors were solid and no major rust on the exterior. Paint looked original although the body had some damaged areas (pushed in fairly well at the drivers rear quarter right on the emblem and some other less severe stuff. Grill was dinged up, bumpers were fairly strait with some rust. I'm sure it will need an interior job but didn't look too close. Didn't get to look in the trunk. Its a Texas car. Car hasnt been started in years. He started a restoration on it and the guy never paid him any money, now its his.
I'm going back to look again. Any suggestions on what to look for or at?
In your opinion is the $5000 range high for a car in this general condition if its all original?
Thanks for any comments.
Chris
He also has a disassembled 72 SS Chevelle for $500, no motor or trans (was a 454 he said). Frame is painted, it all seemed to be there just disassembled completely (good parts car for someone?). Another abandoned restoration, owner took the motor and tranny, left the rest.
LeoP Mar 26th, 04, 9:48 AM My first question is "Does he have a title for either of these cars"? $5000 is probably a steal, without seeing the car.
Rich-L79 Mar 26th, 04, 10:05 AM $5000 for a fairly-complete-but-needing-a-complete-restoration-and-doesn't-run 65 SS sounds rather high to me. The best selling point is a solid body, but without seeing the trunk it's hard to say how completely solid it is. If it had a solid interior and a fairly straight body the price might seem on the high side of reasonable, but as you describe it it sounds high. Perhaps he is trying to recoup money owed him than asking what would be a reasonable cost?

ed3196499 Mar 26th, 04, 11:03 AM I agree with Rich seems alittle high for that car, most parts a available for them with the exception of good quarter panels they just have quarter skins available, but bumpers and grill and interior parts should be easy to find. I would check the body mounts on the frame a few of these 64 and 65's I have looked at have rotted thru around the rubber body mounts on the frame the trunk and the quarters behind the rear wheels as well as the fenders behind the front wheels are problem areas to check as well. where in TX? I might be interested in the 72
ccarney69 Mar 26th, 04, 1:33 PM Both of the cars are in Alexandria Louisiana. He is waiting on the title for the 65 (said it will be in any day, then its gone), I didn't ask about the 72. He has many cars that he showed me real quick, so I didn't spend much time with any one car.
As for the 65 I comment "a Texas car" because of the original Texas dealership emblem on the trunk and the Texas tags. The car does not need any quarters or patch panels. Everything that I saw looked repairalble as is. But remember it was a quick look. He said it does run and was when it was parked there.
I've scheduled to go and look again one day next week and will take pictures of both cars and verify the numbers.
These cars are not being advertised for sale, an old friend (who hunts on his property) suggested that I go there and talk with him.
I have a strait 65 SS car already and am not really looking for another one. But mine is not an A/C or 327 car and I dont want to see a decent SS car waste away.
Any comments are welcome!
