OPEN HEADERS!!! just kidding :D . I hear dynomax makes a good sounding muffler, mellow at idle, and loud when you really get on it

I agree with onick. My dad had a set on one car and they sounded very good. I atill went with Flow Masters on my car.

I know there are number of contributing factors to " making a exhaust sound" BBC, SBC, dia of exhaust pipe ect..
I have almost identical motors and flowmaster exhaust sys. on my 64 and 65 cars. The only difference is the mufflers.. one being Flowmasters 40's and the other Dynomax Ultra Flows.. The ultra flows are much quiter and get louder as you stomp on the go pedal.. my only dislike is it has a Rapping plus type note like a glass pack.. not like the steady roar from the flow masters...

It's too bad one can't test mufflers on a car before buying them. I recently put some Flowmasters on a Corvette 327 and don't care for them. In my opinion, they are too quiet.

A few years ago, I bought some much cheaper mufflers for a 58 Corvette 283. They were still a large oval style muffler (not cherry bombs or something like that) but they sounded great.

Flowmaster makes more than one model of muffler. What I bought was the model (maybe model 50??) recommended for street use. If I did this again, I'd look for their strip model. smile.gif

Spintech makes a really nice sounding muffler. Not too loud, but loud enough...and they sound awesome at WOT

I personally like the sound of Borla. I had them on a previous SS396 along with Hooker Competition Headers, and it sounded awesome.

Hooker Aero chambers all the way. They don't make a lot of noise and cruise but are loud at idle and nice at WOT.

You'll never come to any consensus this way. Your best bet is to find sound clips on the internet and judge for yourself, but keep in mind that x muffler on y motor will not sound the same as that same muffler on your car.

I'll put one vote for Edelbrock RPM Mufflers (similar design to ultraflow & magnaflow mufflers)
And one vote for Borla.

I've run Edelbrocks on my last two elkys... Trying hard to decide to go with them again or Borla this time for my Merc.

Dynomax super turbos
Summit turbos
Summit welded mufflers
Summit chambered
Hooker aero chamber
..IMHO,a muffler shouldn't cost more than $50 each unless it stainless steel
..and with that in mind, summit stainless turbos..think they're $79
