: True 72SS
71ontherock Sep 23rd, 04, 6:00 PM Just noticed this on ebay, claims to be a true SS and quotes "I HAVE THIS CAR CHECK BY A PRO. AND BEEN TOLD IT IS A TRUE SS" but what confuses me is the vin says it came with a 307 and it don't look like it has power brakes. Did the 72 SS come with a 307, if not someone is not going to be happy if they win this bid. Here the link

Chris R Sep 23rd, 04, 6:02 PM I dont know about numbers as far as the vin goes. But I do know that the vin wont tell you if its a SS and the SS most certainly did not come with a 307.
Chris.
71ontherock Sep 23rd, 04, 6:12 PM I think the F in the vin means its a 307, someone can confirm that, hate to see someone get shafted and the price is getting up there, not sure if a none SS would go for that saying it needs TLC.

dirty_dawg Sep 23rd, 04, 6:35 PM Are those even the correct seats/door panels? Or are those out of a Monte Carlo?
71ontherock Sep 23rd, 04, 6:57 PM I thought the same thing, even the grill looks like the chrome is painted. You can't see the power booster either. Don't know if I would get his pro to check a car for me.
Bill Rose Sep 23rd, 04, 7:12 PM Something VERY WRONG here. No SS Chevelles came with a 307. The smallest motor in a 72 SS would be 350..
Among the many things I see wrong, are the hood stripes. They go straight back instead of running along the body line like they should..
Johnny B. Sep 23rd, 04, 9:02 PM Yep, take a GOOD look. Everywhere you look
that car is put together wrong and just plain
rough ! I have looked at quite a few cars
that have been on E-bay and none have been
what the seller has claimed.
Buyer beware is putting it mildly graemlins/sad.gif
Maybe a e-mail would be good for some enlightenment.

L7870_cortez Sep 23rd, 04, 9:43 PM Not too argue but I know for a fact you could get a 71 or 72 ss with a 307. Bought a totaled one in 1990 from the original owner. I believe it was a California car.

musclecarfreak Sep 23rd, 04, 9:47 PM base engine in a 72 SS was the 350 two barrel--and disc brakes were standard with the SS package smile.gif
Bill Rose Sep 23rd, 04, 10:32 PM I emailed the seller and the ad has been revised. Seems like an honest dealer who simply didn't know SS Chevelles never came with a 307 V-8..
dirty_dawg Sep 24th, 04, 10:34 AM Hhhmm...what about 71? What was the base V8 for the SS?
riskyvt Sep 24th, 04, 1:57 PM I believe Mike (L7870_cortez) is right...an SS car in 72 could be ordered with any V-8, from 307 to 454.
Johnny B. Sep 24th, 04, 2:24 PM Dean,
Okay... graemlins/clonk.gif
Good to hear from you again.
72supersport Sep 24th, 04, 2:51 PM I have a real 1972 SS and this is not real. The door panels are wrong, the seats are wrong, the stripes are wrong. BE CAREFUL !
71ontherock Sep 24th, 04, 6:40 PM It doesn't look like it got a power booster for the brakes, I thought all 72SS had power brakes, unless they were taken of but why. It looks as if some don't care if its real or not the price is still rising. At least the guy let the bidders know.

musclecarfreak Sep 24th, 04, 8:57 PM Does anyone else have a 72 SS with a 307? I have never heard of such until now. I always welcome new information. I have owned two 72 SS 350's and a 72 convertible 350 and always understood the 2 barrel 350 was the base engine in the SS model. Please straighten me out!
The 71 used any V8 from the 350 2-barrel up. The 72 was the same; however there was a version of the 72 brochure drivetrain chart that said you could get the 307 with an SS (never been a typo on a brochure  ). Since an SS was an option on a Malibu, simply finding a numbers matching 72 SS with a 307 just means that you've found a number matching Malibu with a 307. The SS equipment could have been added after the fact.
Having said that, there may have been some with the 307 but I'm very skeptical.
The 307 was not even offered for cars registered in California in 1972, nor were any big block Chevies that year. A California Chevelle SS could only be registered for street use with a 2 or 4 barrel 350 that year.
Chirp08 Sep 25th, 04, 1:46 PM easy to tell: the headlight bezels on 72 ss's were black, there were no chrome stripes except for hte top and bottom of hte grille, that gives it away immediately.
dcarr Sep 26th, 04, 3:38 AM The subject of '71-'72 SS-307s has come up before.
I do not believe any were made. One sales brochure stated that the SS package could come with any V8. That was probably a typo since other documents state that the SS package was available with any *optional* V8. An "optional" V8 would mean a 350-2bbl or larger engine.
The fact is, not one person has ever provided an SS-307 build sheet.
riskyvt Sep 26th, 04, 9:26 PM In Jeffrey Steffes' new book, "Chevelle SS, A Muscle Car Source Book", he addresses this subject on page 95. I quote: "Available for the first time in a Chevelle SS, was the Turbo-Fire 307 small-block rated at 130hp."
In addition to this, I have the Chevrolet SS Muscle Car "RED BOOK" of SS models, showing the 307 V-8 engine codes listed on page 109 for 1972 Chevelle models. It appears to be a rare engine, and I agree with Dan that a buildsheet would be valid proof that one of these 307's made it into the rails of an SS car, but I'm just keeping the myth (or reality) fodder alive by citing printed references on the subject.
rocks66ss Sep 26th, 04, 10:30 PM I have the same books, it has been proven many times that there are many errors in that book!
In the Five years I have been on this site I don't belive anyone has proven, or has seen a 307 SS!!!
This is one of those things that was published in brochures but never happened. The Red Book is a very good guide, but by no means is it the last word.
Also the Chevelle SS Restoration Guide By Paul Herd does not even mention a 307!!! but does state that the 350 was added in 1971 and continued into 1972. But as mentioned above, all of these books have errors in them.
This is one of those questions that should have been posted in the restoration forum(Where originality comes first.) The experts on such matters as these seem to hang out there.
IMO, there were never any Chevelle SS cars built with a 307.
