It's here! The Superbowl of swap meets. It started last night and will have major coverage through out the entire weekend, almost live.

Anybody else think that silver 58 T Bird went TOO cheap? I know you can't see all the details through your TV, but that car looked nice. Really nice. I think just two people were bidding on it.

70 SS 396 Chevelle went for 20K. Thought it would bring more, but is wasn't numbers matching. The big cars are coming. They claim 31 million in sales this year. This auction usually sets the tone for pricing for the upcoming year.

Brock Yates again. I wish they would get someone that knows about Muscle Cars. Blabbering idiot is what he seems like to me.

How about the 69K olds 442?

I thought about taking off work to watch it. graemlins/clonk.gif

The Thunderbird was cool, but not really my cup of tea.

The Chevelle I liked, and I thought it would hit 25 k just because it was @ Barrett-Jackson.

The 442 seemed high, did you catch when they said Lenny Kravitz paid over a hundred k ?

I could watch the auction continuously, if my wife would bring my meals. tongue.gif

But it seemed like he really glossed over that fact, it sort of sounded like he meant the last time one of those cars (only 25 made or something?) sold it went for over 100k, not necessarily Lenny's.

Overall I thought there were some good values in there. Also seemed like the same four guys were bidding on everything.

Oh, and that chick? Pretty nice. I bet she talks a lot of men into doing a lot of things and paying a lot more than they thought they wanted to -- and not just on the auction floor.

I liked that '59 Caddie.

I thought that 70 Red SS went way too cheap, even with the non original drivetrain. Their comments were that the workmanship was very good and it looked nice to me. Appeared to be a 350 HP, automatic with A/C. Something that we as TV viewers just don't know about that car

Yeah, The big T-Birds never did excite most collectors. I stopped doing them for that reason. They never seem to bring decent money.

I was there last Year doing a story and the big money cars will hit the block Saturday and early Sunday. It does seem however prices have cooled down a bit since last year. With a glut of cars out there it only stands to reason. We can only hope!

What about that 1960 vette.
great shape and went for a song.
looked like the guy with the gavel must have had a friend bidding and when it hit 20k he said sold very fast. almost too fast.

I am watching it this week too.I thought some of the cars went cheep the some of them went high to.There was alot of money lost in those fiberglass bodyied hot rods that 34 chevy had over 200,00.00 spent on it,he got about 1/4 back what he paid to build it.dont forget today from 5:00-11:00 Im going to be glues to the TV. :D

I'm amazed that some sellers don't even bother doing a full detail. Plenty of dirt & grime under the hood of Carson's vette. Would it have sold for more if it had been cleaned-up? Who knows?

I entered that contest too. I think that's a nice addition to the program. It'll be interesting to see what car that guy bids on, and if he'll have to shell out any of his own cash if it goes over $50k.

Id say your right when I seen it I thought it was real nice but I just didnt see 200,000 in it,and the way I took it they did all the work to,they must have added in there time too, they probablly charge 100.00 or more an hour. That johnny carson vette suprised me too,I figured since it was a celeb car it would have went to atleast 20,000 but I guess if you have the kind of money most bidders at barret have celeb cars arent that big of deal.Unless its Don Johnson.

I saw the ragtop W-32 442 that Lenny Kravitz had, and it sure looked nice.

Downside to that car is that Lenny Kravitz owned it. My girlfriend used to do his concert promos in the New York City area, and she says that he has the most awful body odor on the planet. Evidently, he is deeply committed to some new-age theory of strengthening his immune system to bacteria by not bathing. Since he has dreadlocks, he doesn't wash his hair. He only washes his face and hands on a regular basis, she says. Everything else is a once-a-month chore. She says you can smell him coming.

Might take some work to get the funk out of that car. graemlins/sad.gif

I too thought the red 70 Chevelle was a good buy.
I also liked the Hennessy Viper. New was $104k. Had 1,500 miles on it and went for I think $50k-$60k.
Brock Yates doesn't even know pink from purple. redface.gif graemlins/clonk.gif
I think the guy that won the $50k to spend is looking for a 66 GTO convert.

Jan 23rd, 04, 7:17 PM
He did much better. Bought a '69 Chevelle SS 396 4 sp convertible. Garnet Red, Parchment interior, white top, and white stripes. To me the most beautiful Chevelle ever made. $63k was a tad steep though.

I can't beleive all the Chevy's being sold, outnumbering all the other makes. But these guys have no clue.A 64 impala with a 409 E vin motor,so their asking what is a evin motor and Brock Yates is calling the 409 a truck motor.

Jan 23rd, 04, 9:31 PM
I saw a 68 SS396 L89 go for $64k, and a 67 427 vette went for 55k. I live about 20 min from the auction and a buddy of mine got some passes for sunday I cant wait to see some of these cars.

DaleM
Jan 23rd, 04, 10:12 PM
The 348/409 series is a truck engine. Chevrolet didn't have anything except the small block and needed something quick to compete with Ford and MoPar until they finally developed the 396. Just because the 348 and 409 developed into a respectable engine doesn't diminish the fact they were originally designed for heavy trucks.

I'm kind of getting turned off by the SNOB remarks. The Chevys pulled the highest numbers and all they talked about at the end was Yourapeein crap. Give me a break. What the he(( is that English dude doing there anyway? Get rid of the Car & Driver mentality when it comes to announcers. How about Chuck Hanson doing the coverage next year?

I also think it's time for Brock Yates to retire!

hey buddy in the yellow jacket was going nuts i know it was a cross ram car but damn 113000 is crazy!!! what about the copo camaro and chevelle that monaco orange copo didnt sell for very much i know it was an auto but someone stole that car!!! what do you guys think?

AZCamino
Jan 24th, 04, 3:05 PM
I was at the auction yesterday, and the two COPO cars were beautiful. I was expecting higher bids for them. Maybe the Chevelle would have gotten higher bids with a 4-spd, and the Camaro interior color was odd. But these were top quality restorations!

Jan 24th, 04, 6:36 PM
The guy that won the 50k spent 63k on a non #'s matching 69 chevelle SS ragtop. Good thing they gave him the 50 because I sure as hell would not have burned 63 large on a non numbers matching 325 horse ragtop.......

Jan 24th, 04, 7:24 PM
What did the COPOs go for?

And how about that guy who spent $675K to get those four Callaway Vettes?

Did anyone see the Lincoln Zephyr sell for $400,000  They said later it was Jay Leno and Payton Manning bidding against one another on the phone. I never heard who won it though?

I heard the crash of an expensive fender bender. The owner of a, I don't know 80s, Lamborghini had one cheek on the seat and one foot in the car, fired it up and hit the gas, well it was in gear and drove it head on into freshly restored mid 60s Austin Healey. Both suffered significant damage. I understand both cars were removed from the auction.

I didn't hear an ambulance so I don' think anyone was hurt, with all the people there that's amazing.

Another 36 Ford custom, has a Packard grill and molded headlights, either hit something or got hit. The bondo was up 1/2" thick. Wonder how much of the rest of the custom body work is just molded bondo. Goes to show you never know what's under that shiny paint job.

It's over! What a let down! graemlins/sad.gif I can't believe they shut down coverage with the best cars coming up to the block for some totally lame repeat of an obscure race!
The auction continues today, but no coverage. You would think they would have a 2 hour recap today....But those television programmers know better than we do as to what we want to watch.

Watched the auction on and off most of the weekend, I was disappointed too Saturday night as the best cars were coming across the block, the coverage ended! Why on earth couldn't they continue that until 10:00? We sure didn't need to see that race! Anyone know what the blue Hemi Cuda that was up when they ended went for? I thought the announcer said it was at $190 when they went off the air.

Tha Barrett Jackson web site will have the final results of all cars sold in about a week from now.
In March, the Palm Beach auction will be live!
Something to look forward to!

Does anyone know if they will be posting the results of all of the cars sold on their web site? It would be interesting to be able to compare values.
