: Waxing
1970SS396&1967 Jun 14th, 04, 3:15 PM Well I waxed my 70 with Mothers last fall and I never did like the way it turned out.It had lots of swirl marks and little scratches that bothered me all winter.I just finised doing it over with Meguires cleaner polish and what a difference. Not advertising for anyone, just stating that it pays to spend a couple of bucks extra for the results.Just a heads up!!
Gerry.....
mr 4 speed Jun 14th, 04, 3:28 PM I have had good luck with Meguires too.I also use 3M's Imperial Hand Glaze..real good stuff.
onebadd66 Jun 14th, 04, 4:03 PM Gotta agree with Chris,Meguires is the only wax I'll let touch my paint. graemlins/thumbsup.gif
OK except maybe for Pamella Anderson :D

71-307 Jun 14th, 04, 6:08 PM speaking of waxing and what not.. my car has lost the clearcoat ( least it looks like it) on the trunk lid, roof, and hood.. is there a wax that may take out the scratchs/swirls and maybe add some luster back???
mr 4 speed Jun 14th, 04, 6:28 PM Rich, the Imperial Hand Glze works on everything I've ever owned over the years..anything from laquer up to bc/cc
In fact,I just finished using some on a 'vette my cousin and I went sandsanded..and that was bc/cc.It really added the finishing touch.
450HPChevelle Jun 14th, 04, 6:46 PM Hi Guys,
I just tried Meguiers NXT Generation wax on my car.
Its their newest wax.My car is painted in laquer, and it is simply the best wax I've ever used. It smells good to! :D I talked to a rep. from Meguiers at a show this weekend. She said that its better than their Meguiers Gold. Its available at Target &
and soon to be available at all Walmart stores.
Wax on....Wax off. :D :D See ya, Brian smile.gif

graemlins/boring.gif I don't think $9.99 is overpriced and it really made my brother in laws car the smoothest and shiniest I have ever seen it.
Bacchus Jun 15th, 04, 6:47 AM I've been using Meguires for a few years. I had a '72 Vette that had a 20-foot paint job on it. After buffing it with Meguires #7, and hand-applying #9 glaze, and following with Gold wax, the car looked almost brand new. It made a HUGE difference in the appeareance. I just recently did the same process on my newly acquired '64 Chevelle. WOW, it's a new car.
I've also been using Meguiars for a few years. BUT always after getting the paint to really pop with the polish, I would be dissappointed at how their wax (any of their waxes) would cloud and dull the shine. In a box with the Mothers Clay Bar System they include a small bottle of Mother's Cleaner/Wax. I tried it and couldn't believe how it shined so much better than Meguiars. Only downside is it had the dreaded white powdery residue that's hard to get out of stripe edges and crevices. Got a sampler packet of Meguiars NXT at CB'04 and it appears to be the equal of Mothers. One of these days I'll break down and buy the $$$ Zaino system.
jgoggan Jun 15th, 04, 1:59 PM So -- I'm curious -- do you all wax by hand only? Or does anyone use a buffer or other powered device?
- John...
JC70SS Jun 15th, 04, 2:06 PM ZAINO!
Bacchus Jun 15th, 04, 2:29 PM I use a buffer for the polish phase (scratch/swirl remover, cleaner, or polishing compound). The glaze and wax goes on by hand.
1970SS396&1967 Jun 15th, 04, 3:32 PM I wax by hand,I like the feel of the nice soft rag when it slides over the smooth suface.I guess you could call it a feeling of satisfaction. But not with Mothers ever again!Ya get what ya pay for.Learned that one many times over.......

LKN BCK Jun 15th, 04, 4:31 PM I'm with Bacchus, meguires #7 show car glaze is great stuff. The paint must already be very smooth to do it by hand or it will gum up on the surface(makes it hard to get off)if not smooth...
Do not use it in the sun!
Something I found to help it go on and come off easier is to wet the applicating rag with water ;) (cut up soft old white T shirt material is what I use to apply and take off folded flat to desired size works good enough for me) I do about 2 sq feet at a time and get it off as soon as possible(get ready for a work out if you are going to give it a try)
Years ago #7 was called (Seal and Reseal)Still the same stuff! If anybody tries the stuff you will find out why they changed the name to show car glaze. smile.gif After using #7 waxing seems to be a waste of time Buttttt waxing my cars for some reason makes me feel better graemlins/thumbsup.gif DANO

DougA Jun 15th, 04, 5:13 PM Im glad I found Zaino,I can through away all those half empty bottles of miracle wax ive tried over the years.
Red 70 SS454 Jun 16th, 04, 12:37 AM I just tried Maguires high tech wax and my shines like never before. :D Kinda spendy @ $15 a bottle. Did the whole car andtook less time than any other wax I've tried. The bootle feels like I hardly used any. Looks like a bottle will last quite a while. I guess it better for the price.
69malibu3speed Jun 16th, 04, 3:57 PM Meguire's NXT is easily the best stuff I've ever used. My 69 Chevelle shines with a deeper, more swirl free shine that it ever has. I've used many different products including Mother's, Zymol, Turtle Wax, NuShine, Auri and many others. The NXT stuff is great...give it a try.
RazzFla70 Jun 16th, 04, 7:00 PM 2nd for ZAINO
richr Jun 17th, 04, 2:59 PM 3rd for Zaino - great product
robert defalco Jun 18th, 04, 1:38 PM i love meguires products i think they are great. but, i tried a car brite product called wheather shield the stuff is awesome it's hard to find. it's liquid so easy to put on and comparitively very easy to take off. and it lasts a long time.
srubydo Jun 18th, 04, 10:15 PM 1970ss396&1967 i noticed you mentoned you car was a 1970 Black Cherry SS396 how does that paint chose look on that car because i was thinking about painting my70 that color with white strips or black with white strips
Redrum Jun 20th, 04, 1:26 AM For those who are relatively new to waxing and swirl marks I find the best way to remove and prevent them is to use these steps to wax:
1. Wash the car throughly using a quality car soap. Get off ALL dirt, bug guts, dust, road tar, pollen, sap and water spots.
2. "Wax" the entire car using a quality swirl reducer such as Meguires. Use the cloth covered foam pads. Use a clean pad as soon as you see even the slightest signs of "dirt" on the pad. You can use both sides. Use very little of the compound and you can go up to panel edges without getting reside on the edges. Wipe the reside off with a soft cotton towel or a waxing cloth. Do this in a garage or shade.
3. Use your favorite wax and apply it with a new clean cotton covered foam pad. Use very little of the wax and you can go up to panel edges without getting reside on the edges. There should be NO "dirt" showing on the pad even after waxing the entire car. It there is any sign of dirt on the pad you will have swirl marks. Wipe off using another soft cotton towel or waxing cloth. Do not use the same one as used with the swirl reducer. Do this in a garage or in the shade.
4. Ater the entire car is waxed use a fresh polishing cloth to rub down the entire car. This will get off most of the towel lint and remove the final bit of haze left from the wax.
It usually takes me about 4 hours to do a car this way and pretty much eliminates swirls that show.
BlueSS454 Jun 20th, 04, 9:03 AM I've been using Meguier's Gold Class wax on my 70 and I am happy with the results. I tell you what works really well for getting the dirt out of the paint is the Mother's Clay bar. I was amazed at how much junk came out of the paint on my 70 after I used it. The paint was smoother than a baby's behind after I was done graemlins/thumbsup.gif
73guna Jun 20th, 04, 11:01 AM Another thumbs up for Meguires #7 glaze graemlins/thumbsup.gif . It gives your paint that "wet" look. Doesnt last that long because its a glaze not wax but , shines great for a car show or cruising. As LKN BCK said it will gum up but I've found out it does this if put on to heavy. Keep the car out of the sun and work in small sections. Its a lot of work to get it all off but nothing beats the shine.
Mitch.
69chevelle355 Jun 20th, 04, 12:40 PM meguiars NXT....awesome stuff, a month later i just give it a 10 minute wash and it looks like i just waxed it. makes the paint look about a mile deep (this is on my girlfriends black 2000 firebird by the way)

mkarstm Jun 20th, 04, 11:17 PM Can we say ZAINO?????????? It is absolutely the finest car polish I have ever used. Give the Meguiars to your brother-in-law.
DjD Jun 21st, 04, 11:44 AM Zaino products work well but if you follow directions you need a weekend or more of applying their assorted products. What really keeps me away is availibility, it's not on store shelves!! I'll give the product credit though as it seems to have a cult following and the average folks that use Zaino don't have anything nice to say about any other product... Present company excluded, the Zaino users here have been very polite compared to other forums I've been to.
What I've found and feel works as well as any other product or combo of products is Meguires Clear Coat Cleaner before a show followed by the red bottle of Cleaner Wax (They have a cream colored bottle with the same name that is part of their numbered application system) and then their Detailer Mist.
If the Clear Coat Cleaner doesn't leave the surface totally smooth, a washing with dish soap to remove all wax from the paint surface (only use dish soap if you want to remove the wax, other wise get a good carwash soap) and then a good going over with clay bar and then start over with Cleaner Wax.... Before cruises and club outing the detailer mist after dusting off the car is all that is needed.
My car gets driven a lot and I only wash it with soap and water after trips to the coast or if the car gets caught in the rain. With the Cleaner Wax even road tar wipes off with a squirt of detailer mist and a soft cloth.

1970SS396&1967 Jun 21st, 04, 3:44 PM Hey srubydo, you asked about the black cherry paint choice on my 70.It was the original color for the car so when I stripped it to repaint I wanted to go back to the original and I am really happy with it!!The paint turned out great and if I wasnt so lazy I would post some pics.Maybe someday.......

Paul70fathombluess Jun 21st, 04, 9:37 PM Mothers 3 phase wax system, tried it on my 70 and i'll never go back to any other wax. it came out awesome! graemlins/thumbsup.gif
mkarstm Jun 21st, 04, 9:42 PM Hey DjD! That is one fine Camaro!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
feeblerboy Jun 21st, 04, 10:44 PM i just started using that wax as yo udry stuff. it works awesome! no swirls or anything and the paint really does pop out afterwords. did i mention its easy to boot?
427L88 Jun 22nd, 04, 9:45 AM You guys wax your Chevelle's, whattyya nuts!?
J/K, never got a wax to lay down nice without swirls. I stick with Mother's sealer/glaze. Almost like wax in terms of beading, but no swirls.
Some good info here, thnx. Dennis, I think its the same as their #26 Yellow high gloss Carnauba wax? Used to use their #7 glaze and 26 wax. Just used the 26 on my daily sicne I have two bottles of it laying around.

Banuchi Sep 5th, 06, 11:53 AM I am aware that an Octane rating of a fuel indicates the ignitability of the fuel: the lower the ovtane, the more prone the fuel is to spontaneous combustion within the cylinders. This is what causes the "knocking".
If one were to mix fuel of two different octanes in equal parts, at the same pump, would one get an octane somewhere in the middle? Also is it advisable to do this; would be marginally cheaper to get the rating nearest to what one wants!! Banuchi
