Gentlemen

I have a 67 that all of its exterior trim pieces, front strip on the hood, rain rails, rear trunk trim, etc, are starting to get that funky look to them. I have looked in past posts and have read about the products to use. But my question is, what causes this and is it better to take these parts in to a shop?

Also I have the SS hood and it seems to really shake while going over any bumps. Is this normal or am I missing some rubber bumpers?

Thanks

Nicholas

I`ve tried several diffrent things on my alum. trim on my 66 elky., but nothing really good.

If all the bumpers are in good shape and adj. right the hood should never move.

I use this kit from Eastwood mounted on a standard bench grinder and it works great. Follow the directions and it will make your trim look unbelievable!Like as in show quality shine. It must be removed from the car though.Best $30 i ever spent.
Buffing kit (http://www.eastwoodcompany.com/aspfiles/itemdy01.asp?Dep_Key1=mfb&UID=2003071318180543&T1=13106&I1.x=69&I1.y=47)

The hood should have rubber side bumpers on it. Your trunk and hood trim are anoidized aluminum and you have to replace, reanoidize, or remove the anoidizing and buff to a shine and then maintain the shine every month or so. The rail gutters are stainless on my 67 and just require buffing.

How do you adjust the hood so it doesnt move so much.

The car does have the side bumpers on it but still seems to move around to much.

Will Autosol be able to remove the defects in the trim?

Thanks

It still has the rubbers but they may be originals and have shrunk or hardened up. I wonder if the front hood catch could be the problem. I'm not familar with autosol but I don't think any type of solvents are going to help you.

The car does not have the original rubber bumpers, I replaced the units with some from a local supplier. Maybe they are too thin? Maybe the hood is bent. I'll check on the latch. Here is a shortcut to the Autosol page at eastwoodco.com.

Nick,
With your hood closed and latched try pulling it up and down. It everything is adjusted it won't move. If it does move you have three points of contact to adjust; the hood latch pin, and the two support posts/bumbers on either side of the radiator. The posts hold the hood up off the radiator and the pin holds it down. If you have scratchs or hood insulation fibers on your radiator, the hood is too low and the posts need to be raised and the latch pin let out. Also check to see if the posts actually contact the hood. Put some chalk or paint in the post and see if it transfers to the hood. There should be no contact with the radiator but contact with the hood and posts, adjust accordingly.

Cool I'll give the adjustment a try.
