: Arizona emmisions on a 72 Malibu
bjquiroz Feb 7th, 04, 6:56 PM I am a couple of weeks from bringing the 72 Malibu I bought back here to AZ. I am new to the Phoenix area and am uncertain to what I will need on this car to pass emmisions. My 83 MC SS and 96 Camaro need the full dyno emissions etc.. etc... and don't know how far back this state goes. In So Cal, my 72 Nova needed the emissions testing and full smog setup. I got the car sans engine so am not sure if it had a smog pump, air injection tubes, etc.... If any of the AZ locals can provide information, that would be fantastic.
d1_bradley Feb 7th, 04, 7:19 PM Here ya go, looks like you'll need the whole deal as there is a visual as well as dyno test. Also, be sure to get it registered in AZ as soon as you bring it in, even if it won't run. There's a penalty if you don't.

pmullaly Feb 8th, 04, 12:28 AM 72 and older only need the IM240 test which is Idle, under load, and gas cap test.(car will be run on a dyno)
Visual is not required for 72 and older.
I played h377 getting my Olds to pass in previous years.
I feel if your car can be regestered with antique plates, has collector car insurance,is not driven more than 2500 miles per year, and is used only for special occasions. Emissions should be waived.
Needless to say if you see a sweet, Green 70 Olds 442 with South Carolina plates Give me a wave graemlins/waving.gif
Philip Feb 8th, 04, 4:12 AM AZ needs to get on a sliding scale and exempt all vehicles 25 years and older. Thankfully all of my vehicles are exempt. None get driven daily into the emmision controled area of Tucson. I use my Harley for regular commuting to work and it is exempt because of its age.
Philip what happens when they test the El Camino?

Visual is not required for 72 and older. So as long as I pass emmisions then I am set? No visual? :D I am just trying to avoid another cost related to parts(smog pump) that IMO really add nothing to help clean up the local air quality.

Thanks to all the quick replies fellas. The help is greatly appreciated.
jimmy Feb 8th, 04, 5:51 AM I take my 72 El Camino through every year, pmullaly
is correct. No visual. They will not open your hood. Just pass emissions and have a good gas cap. That is it.
Good Luck,

Philip what happens when they test the El Camino? I agree 100%! The fact that one section of town gets tested and the other doesnt because of range/township is BS, IMHO- unless of course you live in teh non test area.
Another thing- why arent they setting up a testing station at the border and testing all the Mexican cars that are driving around the AZ streets all the time? From what I understand, You cant BUY a car in Mexico and own it here because they are NOT as regulated for emissions compliance- so why is it alright for those cars to just cross the border and pollute twice as much as the same model car here?
ITs nothing more than strong arm BS and a PATHETIC way of drumming up money for a crappy state government- particularly when California- the strictest state in the ENTIRE UNION when it comes to emissions- even has a sliding rule of 25 years...Thats IMHO, of course  .
I think the test calls for a pass of 5.0 CO, and 300 HC for a V8 engine, but I could be wrong. Good Luck!
bjquiroz Feb 8th, 04, 6:29 PM Great!! That was the news I was hoping to hear. Thanks all again for the help.
