I'm having my 69 chevelle painted the original Cortez Silver metallic and want to put on the SS strips that go on the side.
Year One sells both strip decals or stensil kits if you want to paint on the strips.
What did they use originally? Decals or painted strips?
I want it to be as close to original as possible.
Thanks. Rick

I think (not sure), almost 90% sure though.
That they used decals.
(Like the Heavy Chevy side strips.. those were decals.)

Most were decals although some dealers painted them on with a factory stencil kit. I've seen a factory stencil kit dated Dec 68 if that means anything. If you're going after the factory look, I would use the decals. You have to let the paint dry thouroughly, I'd say 6 weeks if you let it sit in the sun alot, before you apply them. If you choose to paint them, do you plan on burying them in the clear coat for a slick/smooth surface, or painting them on top? Side note: They have to be applied not in a perfectly straight line down the sides, but follow the slight curves of the panel. I have some pictures if you want. You can study alot of 69 pictures AND follow the GM assembly manual for the right dimensions.

Hey Rich when you get it painted send a photo, Hopefully in a few years I'll be at the paint stage, and Cortez Silver is the original for my 69...Dusty aka Dave

Sounds like a good plan, Rick. I would go with the decals. If you decide to paint them on, you will have to make sure that your panel alignment is perfect or you'll be SOL if you have to tweak a fender or a door after the final paint. The decal will be a better choice.
BTW, my car ( 1969 SS ) is also a Cortez Silver car and will be returning to that hue later this year.
Rick, Ground Up sounds like they would be a little closer to you in terms of shipping. Mind you, the service I've gotten at Year One has always been head and shoulders above Ground Up.
