Guys, my master cylinder is leaking where it bolts on to the booster. I bought a re-man m/c but I don't like it. It has a bare metal finish and it doesn't have the bleeder screws like the stock m/c has. I have ordered a re-build kit from O'Reilly Auto Parts and hope to install it in the next couple of days. Does anybody have any experience with re-building a m/c? Any tips would be greatly appreciated. If I have to hone the bore on the old m/c, what should I use for a lubricant. Thanks.

Rebuilding the master cyl. is a pain. Why not purchase a new one for $90.00. The problem occurs when you start taking it apart. You can not clean the cyl. bore properly. No matter how you try to clean the passages-etc. it doesn't work out.It takes only a small amount of grit=leakage. graemlins/hurray.gif

Al speaks the gospel on this one - it is really hard for the home mechanic to properly rebuild a master cylinder to live a long life.

My experience with parts house reman's has been very good. I just put a $19.99 reman/exchange master cylinder on the '65 Elky.

Ask you auto parts supplier if their brake supplier can custom rebuild your own. I did that here with some parts in the past. I have honed and installed new rubbers in a master before. Limited success. I hone with brake fluid as a lube. Clean with good old soapy warm water. Blow dry immediately, then lube with brake fluid again. Might work, but I since brakes are so important, I'd get a rebuilder to do it.
