: power window switches
72sselcamino Jan 13th, 04, 9:52 PM I bought some power window's out of a 70 El Camino. The switches are wrong for my 72. The 70's corner's are rounded, and the 72's are square.
Now I've found some out of a 75, but they have the long prong that goes all the way through the plug on the harness that connect's to the switch, and a round plastic nut securing it. Unlike the 70 harness that I have wich just goes flush.(no long prong)
So my question is can I just drill a hole in the plug so the prong will go through. It appears to have the same pattern. Or is the wiring different.
I hope I didn't make it sound too confuzing. Thank's Cal
J_Fairchild Jan 13th, 04, 10:30 PM I'd worry about drilling a hole thru plug.Unless you provide a way to protect the prong from grounding out on metal door frame just in case.Could you possibly cut or grind down new style prong on switch? Just a thought?...Jim
drptop70ss Jan 13th, 04, 11:11 PM As long as the wiring is the same I would use a set of cutters and remove the long pin. It is for alignment purposes so you dont put the switch on backwards. I wouldnt try drilling the wiring connector.
72sselcamino Jan 13th, 04, 11:31 PM Here's some pic's (http://community.webshots.com/album/111142248uBEhXM)
The problem is my plug has the plastic tab that hold's it to the switch broke off. It was duct tapped on, so there must have been a problem.
Just curious if anyone has used the different year switches, and drilled the hole like I'm talking about. Thank's, Cal
Elree Colby Jan 14th, 04, 12:28 AM Make sure the added 3/8"-1/2" is not a problem when installed. Otherwise you can drill the hole through the connector and use the blue retainer.
FO_FDYFO Jan 14th, 04, 10:00 AM drill thru and glue a piece of rubber to it so you can be sure it doesnt short out. i really could use the round switches you have, would you sell them to me?

John_Muha Jan 14th, 04, 11:22 AM Those look close to the switches used in later year door locks. Not the housing, but the switch. Thought the switches could be replaced in the older housings.
RC 70 Jan 14th, 04, 12:34 PM I have a set out of a 71,72 Chevelle. Do you have just the 2 switches for El Camino, or a full set for a Chevelle?
72sselcamino Jan 14th, 04, 6:00 PM Thank's for all the replies.
Pete. All I have for a 70 is the driver's side 2 button for a El Camino. What are you needing.
Ron. For a 72 I have the driver's side 4 button wich is wrong for my El Camino, and a single pass side. I need the square driver's side 2 button.
Resq302 Jan 14th, 04, 8:22 PM Since the 70 El Camino window switch would not work for you. Would you want to sell it? I have a 70 El Camino SS 396 with power windows and was thinking about getting me a spare window switch. Drop me an email at Resq302@aol.com if you would want to sell it with how much.

Elree Colby Jan 15th, 04, 12:08 AM The 64-70 ElCamino driver side power window switch is available from GM Parts direct (http://www.gmpartsdirect.com/) Part # 4432793.
I used the switch mounting hardware from a mid 70's double switch, it's not the same as what was use on 70, but works well.
72sselcamino Jan 15th, 04, 2:19 PM Sorry guy's. The one's I have are all I've got for now. They might be wrong, but they'll still work. Hope you understand.
Beside's, look's like Elree came up with the answer to make everyone happy. graemlins/thumbsup.gif Cal
