: 67 convertable frame
67droptop Mar 7th, 04, 10:18 PM I have a 67 covertable, restored, nice body, etc, but the frame has been repaired, I beleive due to rust out (mid west car-Indy area). The area is from the rear of the door to the rear axle hump. The work appears somewhat shoddy looking, and, I also have a rust hole in the vertical section of the hump 1 1/2" by 3/4". I'm looking for options here- I have already posted an ad for another frame, but so far, no matches, just coupe frames, which are not boxed. Another reply stated an El Camino frame is boxed and close, with just a few mods needed. I can't verify this- any ideas? Should I just get mine welded up?
MileHiSS Mar 7th, 04, 10:41 PM I would think a good shop could repair yours easily enough. My frame is in good shape but I would have no reservations about rebuilding it if it needed work. That way you could keep your matching VIN numbers. Any other frame would have to be modified to work, so why not keep you own?
onabudget Mar 7th, 04, 11:41 PM Repair yours, a good chassis/body shop should be able to handle it. Check them out first, shoddy work can be dangerous.
A frame swap on a ragtop reqires almost complete dissasembly. Ther eis no roof to help hold the body straight and its easy to twist it. Just a little and you'll never notice it until you try to re-mount and the holes don't line up. This happened to me on my former 67 rag.
A frame off resto is great but only if you need to.
67slowpoke Mar 8th, 04, 1:41 PM Could look for a 67 Buick GS 400 frame. The coupes used a convertable boxed frame. Of course they didn't make too many of those either. I've seen people box coupe frames also. Good luck in your hunt, replace the frame, you'll be happier down the road.
67 GTO Mar 9th, 04, 12:39 AM From what I understand the BOP and Elky frames are a couple inches longer.
Food for thought: You've already got the boxed sections. Why not add them to a regular frame?
shvel Mar 9th, 04, 8:51 AM Droptop - the El Camino frame is longer by about 3" in the rear section behind the spring perches, but it is boxed. I have both, convertible frame and El Camino frame and haven't decided which one to use for my convertible. It too has "frame" problems - rusted out area. I don't like the idea of messing up the El Camino frame, but haven't looked into how much it'll cost me to have the convertible frame fixed. And, that may be awhile yet before it happens. I'm in the middle of a "frame off" with my '71. But good luck with either way you decide. graemlins/thumbsup.gif
67droptop Mar 24th, 04, 9:08 PM Thanks to all for the advice- I scored a 67 elky frame for a reasonable price, although its not perfect, I think I can fix it! I also downloaded frame dimensions- yes, the elky is 3" longer- but it will be easy to modify it- just cut 3" out before the tail peice and weld it back on.
WayneK Mar 25th, 04, 8:41 AM I used a 66 GS frame on my 64 conv...and yor right ,,you need it remove 3.270 " from the side rear body mount to the end body mount...
it' was easy to build a small welding JIG out of 2x6 and 1 in pipe..
66n67 Mar 27th, 04, 7:54 AM I have the same problem. What did you need the JIG for? Thanks...
WayneK Mar 28th, 04, 8:36 PM The welding Jig was to position the rear cut off tail section B-4 Welding. The Manual gives a length and higth dim. from a Datum line. that with the X dim measurment. to square it..
You now have Hight ,Length and anx X masurment
