: What do you call this piece? Does it have a part number?

My 1967 SS 4 speed is missing the metal piece that fits around the steering column at the firewall. Judging by the firewall holes, the piece would bolt to the firewall with four bolts. It looks like the rod from the clutch would also run through that piece.

What is this piece called? Does it do anything other than seal off the hole in the firewall? And does anyone make this piece if I can't find a used one?

Thanks!

If I remember right from doing my 67, there are two metal parts that clamp to the steering column and 4 screw hold it to the fire wall. There is a rubber seal that goes between the fire wall and the two plates, the seal can be ordered from any of the parts catalogs (seal, steering col. to fire wall). You will also have to buy a seal for the clutch linkage. I don't know if they make the metal plates. My factory assembly manual, under the column to dash seal section refers to it as: #397108 cover-inner. Maybe you'll have to get them from a car in the junk yard.

Thanks for the info. I think you are right that the part is not reproduced. Unfortunately I know of no '67 Chevelles in junk yards around here. So I'll keep looking. smile.gif

Hey northern, I'll be going to the junk yard on Wednesday or Thursday. E-mail me if you would like me look. I know there is one 67 El Camino that still has the column in it, maybe the items you need are there too.

Yes!!! Please have a look for the piece!! I checked various cars in a junk yard today and had no luck. (Did find a few other rare parts though.) No Chevelles in the yard.

All the GM cars that I saw have a metal plate around the steering column at the firewall, but the plates aren't the right shape and don't have the same bolt spacing as the '67 with a four speed. The cars I've looked at have spacing between the left and right bolt holes of about 6 inches. The piece I need probably has about 7 or 8 inches between the left and right bolt holes. In addition to the hole for the steering column, it also needs a hole for the clutch rod, although I suppose I could cut that hole if a piece did not have it.
