: need help obtaining title for 65 ss
GRADY Apr 7th, 04, 7:47 PM I recently found a 65 malibu ss in need of total restoration but the vehicle has no title. I live in maryland and D.M.V said the only way to get this vehicle registered was to get a "writ of mandimus" does anyone have any suggestions on how to obtain a title. Or, has anyone ever done this "writ" thing?
Have you tried a Tag and Title service?

BK72SS Apr 8th, 04, 2:33 AM Grady: I'm in the same boat as you I'm buying a 68 Chevelle out of a junkyard and need to find a way to get a title for it. Is the title lost or is this a junkyard car too? What I will be doing is getting a salvage title, it looks like a regular Maryland title except it says salvage title. This can only be obtained by a junkyard owner and represents a title that is being transfered from the junkyard owner to me, once I have the salvage title I have to have the vehicle inspected my a Maryland police officer, I've been told all they check is to make sure the vin checks out and that it hasn't beeen altered or swapped. After it is inspected the officer signs the salvage title then I can apply for a new clear Maryland title, hopefully it will be that easy but when it comes to situations like this in Maryland it is a royal PIA. I am waiting for the junkyard owner to get me the salvage title but I think it will be a few weeks, so for the mean time my future 68 is still setting in the junkyard and I keep hoping no one takes any pieces off of it. Good luck in your search, if something positive comes up let me know I would like to have a back up plan in case the salvage title deal doesn't work. graemlins/thumbsup.gif
hgerrick Apr 8th, 04, 7:37 AM A friend of mine did this for a bike and there is another guy at work talking about it now for a Bronco or something. There is a couple states down south that don't require titles, ( not an expert, but know people that have done it) like Georgia, maybe Arkansas, something like that. But outfits down there basiclly "buy" the vehicle then sell it back to you with the required paperwork to get a title. This works in PA, just as tough as MD I think. Poke around a little bit with that plan in mind and see what you come up with!!!!! Under a hundred bucks, quick to.
BillK Apr 8th, 04, 7:39 AM Brandon,
You might want to check on the salvage title before you go for it. If you plan on keeping the car forever, its ok. But if you ever plan on selling, it is a red flag. Usually, salvage titles are for vehicles that have been badly damaged in collisions and "reclaimed" I personally would never purchase a car with a salvage title unless I had some pretty good proof that it had not been a collision job. I think I would try a title service first, like the others said. They have the connections to make things happen.
d1_bradley Apr 8th, 04, 1:46 PM Some of the services "clean" the title by getting one in Oregon or Idaho, don't remember which, and then use it to title in the state you want. That used to be REAL common here in AZ as a way to clean a salvage title.
BK72SS Apr 9th, 04, 5:58 AM Bill: Thanks for your response, from what my MVA told me the salvage title will only be needed for me to apply for a new title. The new title will not be branded a salvage title for it's life. Once the police sign off on it and I apply for a new title it will be a new clear Maryland title, or atleast this is what I was told at my local MVA.

Tom's 68 Apr 9th, 04, 6:09 AM don't know about md but pa has a spot on the title that tells you the car was reconstructed
there is an r in the title number
and it does not matter if you got it damaged or complete as soon as there is a cert of scrap then it is a reconstructed car
