: Windshield Glass Advice Needed
Super70 Nov 9th, 04, 2:43 PM Are PPG brand windshields being produced for the A-body, more specifically for the 70-72 Chevelles? How about rear glass?
I cannot locate a glass shop in Albuquerque that sells anyhing other than CrinaMex which is aftermarket glass made in Mexico. About 3 years ago, I was able to purchase a PPG (number DW 0724) windshield, however it seems as though no one carries the PPG brand. Does anyone have any experience regarding the use of the CrinaMex brand? Are those windshields equal to or less quality than the PPG brand? I know there also exists Pilkington, and Guardian brands, however no glass shop apparently sell those brands here either.
dabuickman Nov 9th, 04, 5:49 PM i would only use ppg or lof-now pilkington. do not use anything else. its funny, but around here on the east coast, ppg is everywhere. if it helps, the part number is DW724-GBN or GTN or clear
D-domestic
W-windshield
724-part number
G-green, the color of the whole glass
T- tint, the glass has no upper shade
B- blue shaded upper band
N-no hardware or attached mldgs.
if you find any available it will be the shaded glass -GBN. many yrs ago when i managed a glass shop i tried to get a clear one for a friends 69 race car so he could see the tree better. i had no luck in any brands.
good luck
Rob
a64olz Nov 10th, 04, 10:55 PM I bought a LOF from Belen Glass and Mirror for my 64
BlueSS454 Nov 10th, 04, 11:50 PM I also bought LOF/PPG glass for my cars from a guy I know that works for LOF now Pilkington. Can't beat the OEM manufacturer.
450HPChevelle Nov 12th, 04, 6:52 PM Hi Super70,
Heres the number to Pilkington glass.1-800-848-1351
I used them for my car. For a small fee, they will date code the glass to match the rest of your glass.
Hope this helps. smile.gif Brian
Super70 Nov 15th, 04, 2:36 PM Thanks for the responses! I talked to the glass dealer in ABQ again and was able to return the CrinaMex brand for PPG. Cost me about $35 more, however I thought it was worth it. I paid $155 for the windshield (their cost since they screwed up in the first place by giving me CrinaMex instead of PPG AND when I ordered it, I specifically requested PPG). You know what? The PPG windshield is also made in Mexico! (Nothing really wrong with that as long as it is quality glass)
I also decided to pop for the rear glass (PPG Part number is DBO03992 GTNCOM). It also was a PPG brand. I discovered it has an incorrect curve on it. I have the old glass as well as another spare is that it is curved inward towards the package shelf. The one I got is curved outward of the package shelf. This is very strange situation indeed. There is curvature from left to right as well as from top to bottom. Are there any differences between Chevelle rear glass and other similar year (70-72) Buick, Olds, Pontiac (BOP) A-bodies? Maybe I was given a glass replacement for the other GM models, who knows maybe PPG is making them with a different curvature now. Anyone have a part number for the PPG rear glass. I am going back ASAP to the glass dealer and see if the glass they have in stock is the same as what I received.
Super 70, I went through the same thing on rear glass a couple years ago for my '69 2 dr hardtop. I had two different PPG rear glasses from two different local suppliers and they were both the same (wrong curvature like you mentioned). I verified the application was correct. '68-72 Chevelle, '70-'72 Monte Carlo, and '69-'72 (I think) Grand Prix 2 dr hardtop are all that use the same glass and that's what the application was for. I ended up buying a second hand but never installed LOF-Pilkington glass that fit perfectly. Why the PPG is so out of whack is still a mystery to me. Apparently they're trying to peddle that crap.
Super70 Nov 16th, 04, 8:05 PM Thanks Von et al. Went back to the glass shop to discuss. They have no interest as to whether the curvature of the glass is wrong. They just go by the book and if it provides a part number for the glass, thats about all they know. Looks like I'll have to suck it up ($200+ tax - yikes!!) and keep the glass. Doesn't really look all that bad, although I am used to seeing the inward curvature of the glass rather than the outward curvature. Hopefully the "Chevelle Police" or the car show nitpickers won't give me too much grief over it. Oh well...
