: Newbie questions, please.
dmnsmith2 Jan 16th, 04, 8:12 PM Looked at a 70 Chevelle today and I have many questions. Sorry if they are basic.
There is a small amount of water that came out of the exhaust after the test drive. Small spot beneath the exhaust What does this mean?
The left blinker stays lit, does not blink. Bad bulb? Electrical problem? Right blinker works fine.
And one more. There is no overflow tank for the radiator. And fluid did leak out after the test drive. I don't understand the rational behind this design. Won't you have to keep filling up the fluid from time to time. THANKS!!
RC 70 Jan 16th, 04, 8:28 PM Some condensation will cause some water to come out of the tail pipes after sitting for a while, not sure about after a test drive though. How long was your drive?
The blinker is probably not a big deal. Could be a bulb or bad socket or corrosion in the socket. A lot of times just cleaning the light socket in the tail lamp takes care of this.
If fluid leaked out of the radiator today after a short test drive, think what it will be like in the middle of summer. There are aftermarket overflow kits available, but it sounds like there will be more to it. Maybe the radiator needs flushed, new thermostat or ?? but something is going on there. BTW I can drive my 70 in the middle of summer and idle at lights etc. with no radiaitor overflow.
dmnsmith2 Jan 16th, 04, 8:50 PM The test drive was about 15 miles. Mostly on the hiwaay. It was 60 degrees today if that bit of info does help.
Anyway, the overflow sounds like it could be an easy fix?
How does one tell if the thermistat needs replaced?
saturnstyl Jan 16th, 04, 9:27 PM Dad has a '70. Lots of water out of the exhaust too, don't worry its just condensation. You probably have a bad bulb, and you can easily mount a catch tank in the inner fender passenger side so the battery hides it! Dads puked a lot until we installed the catch can. Of course that motor is currently on a stand and the car is awaiting its Ramjet 502!!!!! Its on its way from washington state. Long trip apparently.....
John D Jan 17th, 04, 9:54 AM Agree with all 3 explanations. The "rational" of thinking on the overflow was that 30+ years ago nobody gave a rip if vehicles puked fluids onto the road/environment (and people were used to checking fluids regularly - we've been spoiled by today's low/no maintenance engines).
Rusty Bucket Jan 17th, 04, 10:21 AM If your interested in buying the car, try and look at the coolant level cold. There's a "fill level" stamped on the radiator tank several inches down from the top. If it's filled to the top there's no room for expansion and some coolant will get squeezed out. Made a big deal of the problems you see with the seller, maybe it'll knock the price down. :D

RedSS454 Jan 17th, 04, 2:07 PM Sorry to disagree, the light is staying on.
not a bad bulb or ground.
it is getting 12 volts constant,to stay on.
the flasher gives a pulse of 12 volt to make it blink.
some where it is picking up 12 volts.
does it go off when the key is off?
if it does, when you turn the key on does it light up?
or only stay on after the turn signal is used.
what ever it is is no big deal.
buy the car. and be happy with a chevelle.
good luck graemlins/thumbsup.gif jim
dmnsmith2 Jan 17th, 04, 4:46 PM Red,
The light stays on when the blinker is on. Goes off when the car is shut off. Turn the car on, it stays lit.
RedSS454 Jan 17th, 04, 6:25 PM It sounds like there is a short somewhere in the wiring for the directional. Get a test light, start at the bulb, and work backwards towards the flasher and with the directional switch in the "off" postion, find where its picking up the 12 volts from. Good luck and Happy hunting. :D

RB69SS396Conv Jan 17th, 04, 6:47 PM The blinker staying on is a bad bulb.
The old mechanical blinkers wouldn't blink if a bulb burned out, because they are a heater design, and there wouldn't be enough current to heat them up enough to blink if all the bulbs (both of them) weren't working. Alot of the newer ones will blink anyway, because they don't work the same way.
Not a big deal to fix obviously. Just find which bulb it is and replace it.
