I always used manual trans oil.

A good grade of lithium based chassis grease has always been the recommendation. However, there may be some synthetics today that may be as good or better.

One thing, don't overfill your manual gear. Leave some air space inside. When the gear heats up from engine compartment heat, the grease will expand and need some place to go. If the gear is 100% full of grease, the build up of pressure can blow the pitman shaft grease seal or the input shaft seal.
