I just noticed some rear end gear oil on my garage floor. I can see drips coming from the very bottom of the driveshaft area. Where is the oil leaking from?

You have a rear seal leak. The driveshaft has to be removed-be careful of the u-joints. When you drop the shaft-use duct tape to secure the u-joints from coming apart. The yoke has a large nut in the center and this has to be removed before you can change the round seal. Take your time and work safely. graemlins/beers.gif

does the nut need to have a certain pounds i have to tighten it to? Does the seal come out easily?

Be VERY CAREFUL about counting the number of turns it takes to remove the nut-and then put it back EXACTLY the same amount. If you HAVE to err, stick it on 1/16 turn too tight.

The only way to do this job properly involves removing the whole guts of the rear axle, and measuring the pinion bearing drag with an inch-pound torque wrench.

You CANNOT just tighten the nut to a specific torque.

The pinion bearing drag should be no more than 25 inch pounds. YOu will need to reset the preload on the pinion after doing so. Going to far will result in pinion baering failure.
