The tray on my 67 bolts from underneath through the inner wheelwell and a couple of bolts from up top into the radiator support. Just use some penetrating oil on the bolts before you try loosening them!

i guess i just better clean the underside of the tray first. i could not see any bolts when i looked. i guess a flashlight would help as well.

thanks!!!

Yes, a few bolts on the bottom of the fender liner, plus (I think) 2 at the front. Car's not here so I can't verify.

I have a stupid question while you guys are on the topic:
What was the battery tray originally made of?

Just asking, cuz when i got my 70 malibu it had a nicely crafted wooden one which i replaced with stainless steel one. I was wondering if it was original, or just something my grandfather threw in as a reclacement.

The battery box was made of stamped steel. You can buy them fairly cheap, under 20 bucks, from most of the repro houses. The repros even come painted with an epoxy coating to retard the corrosion from the battery. I just changed mine again. Simple job. Just take your time to locate the bolts that hold it in, and use plenty of Liquid Wrench to loosen them.
