Burned through the clear and the paint with the buffer on the door. There are two places where the clear got hot enough to bubble, but didn't damage the basecoat. Should I just remove the door and repaint or is there another way that would look acceptable. Thanks for helping and please don't beat me up, I've done a pretty good job of that by myself.

Everybodies done it!! No easy way. Sand it all smooth maybe dust a little primer or sealer on areas that you broke through. Light scuff and reshoot.
The reason I would dust a little primer would be to keep the repaired area from lifting. Good Luck, Mike

I've done it too. It looks black so you can touch it up with a brush and sand and buff it in when it dries or reshoot the door.

I'm with Mike on this one. The only thing is, you have to really be careful with the primer or sealer. While spraying it on this little spot you are bound to get some particles out further than you think unless you mask off the whole door and only expose a little bit right where the sand thru is.

On the other hand, you can "seal" it as well with your base coat and not shoot the primer at all. They both have solvent in them, so either one could cause a lift from solvent getting under that sanded edge. So the trick is not what to use, but how to apply it. If you DUST base coat on lightly allowing it to totally flash before another dusting it will build up a barrier so when you apply the wetter coat of color like normal the solvents won't get down under the edge of the sand thru.

Just sand the whole door with 1200 then dust some color on the spot, blending it out and then clear the door.

Oh yeah, and don't feel bad, this is one that every one of use has done. Some even multiple times. smile.gif

Since Steve did not burn thru the base coat, why can't he just reclear the repair area? This is probably a dumb question for you experienced painters but I haven't worked with base/clear.

1968SS, I did burn through the basecoat on the outside edge of the door. The pic shows the primer. I re-read my post and I was unclear about the damage. Thanks for all the help guys.

Steve.. I always live by the rule a Mistake is just that.. it's only when you repeate it is it a BAD MISTAKE..

a litle trick, run a length of masking tape (body shop tape not the Hardwhear store stuff)
1/8 in over and along the sharp body lines and the outer edge of your panels. The tape is a safty for burn through and forget the BUFF OFF an EDGE rule..

The area under the edge is not sanded, and rarely wil it need any hand or carfull buff to detect a difference.. Now if you have dirt on the peak this proceedure is no good...
