Hi everybody. My name is Hans and I am new to this board. I recently found a ´70 SS-396 Conv for sale. How do I know if it is a true SS. It has all the SS-emblems, wheels, rear bumper but it don´t have the round instrument cluster. Are there any SS-396 built with stardard instrument cluster?

Hans,welcome to the board.
all 1970-72 Chevelle SS's had the round insturments cluster.
Does it has disc brakes? 12 bolt?

Hi Chris, Thanks for the info. It has a 12-bolt rear end, forgot to check for disc brakes. Was round instruments included in SS-option? If so could it be a delete-option?

Welcome! Here is a link that may help.
SS ident (http://www.chevelles.com/shop/ss_ident.html)

Like Chris said, sweep dash = not SS. But hey sounds like still got a great car!

I'm now searching for a car myself and have found a few.. Just remember even if everything matches up doesn't mean it's an SS if you don't have paperwork to prove it. Doesn't mean it's not a good car, just don't pay for SS without proof that it's an SS. There is not one thing on an SS that you can't add to a plain Chevelle or Malibu.

will do..

I have some questions but hate to steal his post.

Is 20,000$ a lot of money for a 70, with a 454 perfect body, and interior and drivetrain..

The only thing at this point I cannot prove is if it was a orginal Big block car.

I'm going to get the vin plate hopefully this weekend and go from there.

The vin will tell if it was a V8, nothing more. Can't tell from the VIN if it is an SS. $20,000 if it is everything you described does not sound out of line, but I don't know for sure. Depends on where you live. Maybe others would have a better idea.

Thanks everybody for the info. I will take another look at the ´70. I will also look at a ´68 SS-396 with matching number "ET" 396. The ´68 is so much easier to verify that it is a true SS.

I'm from Maryland.. No. I would suggest doing a search on the web for 70 chevelle. You'll find lots for sale which will give you a general idea. Look in local papers. It's going to be hard for anyone to make that type of call without actually seeing the car.

a Big give away for a true big block car is the size of the fuel line which should be 3/8
