i have a question regarding my chevelle. when i
graduated from high school in 1971, i bought a 66 ss 396 chevelle. it had 70,000
miles on it, was the 325 horse 396 , 4speed, regal red with a black vinyl top.
clean and all original except for a hurst shifter. my question is,- i am trying to
find out if it is still around. i live in michigan and i called the secratary of
states office and was told without the vin they can't trace it. i dont have the
vin after all these years and was wondering if anyone has any suggestions. i would
love to know if it went into the crusher or if it is still around. oh bye the
way, i paid 750 bucks for it if you can beleive that. thanks.

Well, in 1971 $750 was a lot of money for a 70,000 mile used car.

Since it is not likely that you ever bought auto insurance on the car at the time, not much chance of coming up with a VIN#. Did you ever receive any citations for skillful driving? Maybe you could get some numbers that way.

Your bigger problem is all of the privacy laws now in effect. Makes vehicle history searches difficult.

Good luck, Thomas

You didn't say how long you owned it/when you sold it?? Why wouldn't you have had auto insurance on a car? Contact the insurance company, if you recall the name and see if you get lucky?

Or if you have a picture of it, see if you can read the license plate...

Auto insurance was pretty unpopular then, especially among young used car buyers. Didn't help any if you were a young male and buying a car with an engine that many insurance companies would add a "surcharge" onto. Besides, the "wasted" money spent on insurance could be put to "better" use buying car parts and such. Hey, you don't have to like it, just the way it often was.

I was in the same situation trying to find my dads car,i lucked up and found a repo slip with the vin.

As the others have stated, insurance, repo, tag number, tickets are about your only hope.

Good luck.
