: Chevelle Restoration
Mhayen Dec 13th, 04, 3:58 PM I purchased an awesome '72 Chevelle -- Heavy Chevy. I want to restore the interior, however, I know nothing about cars or restoration. I am considering purchasing the book "Chevelle SS Restoration Guide -- 1964-1972 (Authentic Restoration Guide)", by Paul A. Herd.
Is this a good book? Or do you have any ideas of other books.
I am looking for a step by step guide to help me do the most basic things -- replace head liner, dashboard, door panels and so on.
Thank... And if I can ever figure out how to post pictures I will do so.
EddieC67ss Dec 13th, 04, 4:34 PM Book is fair, probably get better info on this site.
ben70 Dec 13th, 04, 4:38 PM As was said, this site has a TON of great information. Run some searches and you will see. I think a bound copy of the assembly manual is a MUST also! That has paid for itself many times over. Good luck!
Freddy Mercado Dec 13th, 04, 4:40 PM There are some "not so" in the book you mentioned by Herd. Pretty good though. Like Ben said, the assembly manual is the best.
Fisher Body Manual is also good. It explains the things you are doing pretty well.
guerrero777 Dec 13th, 04, 8:51 PM I belive the book is on sale at Original Parts Group for 20 bucks until January. I am not sure but I had recieved a sale flier in the mail a while back. I paid 30 for mine. Just remember like these guys here said....there is text book and there is how the car REALLY came. The guy I bought my car from had it since 70 and made NO changes. The car does not reflect what the book says in every aspect. Take it easy.
gigem Dec 14th, 04, 10:33 AM Good luck replacing door panels on a Heavy Chevy. I don't think they are being reproduced...
72Conv Dec 14th, 04, 2:34 PM Mhayen,
Congratulations on your purchase! Unfortunately, as Gigem stated, the Heavy Chevy interior is not being reproduced. The HC came with the base model interior, which is different from the Malibu and SS. You may be able to find the seat cover material (cloth or vinyl), but a complete kit is not available. Even the headliner and sunvisor material is different, however Year One does offer these items (non-perforated). As you probably know HC's only came with rubber floor mats (no carpet). ACC sells a good quality mat in black that is close. The hardest items to find are the base model door panels. The only thing to do here is look for another HC or base model that someone is parting out. Make sure they are the same year as your car as 71 and 72 panels are different. Hope this helps. Good luck with your restoration!

From the research I have done I am fairly confident that it is a Heavy Chevy -- VIN: 1C37J2K530117.
The dash area the circle gauges - clock, speedometer, tach, and so on. There is also a tachometer near the bottom of the dash panel.
There is also a domed hood. From the research, one part of me says its an SS (but VIN does not say it) and the other part of me says its a Heavy Chevy. At car shows, I look at the 72 SS and it is exactly like mine. But I have never seen a Heavy Chevy in person to compare it to.
Huh?
72Conv Dec 15th, 04, 9:48 AM The "C" in your VIN indicates that your car was a base model car and may well have been a Heavy Chevy. The only way to tell for sure is to find a build sheet. It is definitely not a SS. If the interior is gone there may still be a build sheet on top of the gas tank or other places. The "J" in the VIN indicates that it originally came with a 350 4bbl. A Heavy could be ordered with the round gauge package like the Super Sports had.
