I moved this here because I thought it may get a (better) response. Thanks!

I am going to do a little detailing in the engine compartment. The engine is OK, but somewhere along the line someone painted the power steering components black, booster resevoir and cap (to look like the firewall). Was this common to do back anytime?

What would be the best way to take the black paint off the booster and other components? Any other recommendations would be welcome, thanks.

I used Laquer Thinner on my firewall. It removed all the spray bomb paint and left the original firewall coating. You could try a small amount in a hard to see spot and see if it will work for you. Just don't use too much or rub/wipe too hard.

What's the condition of your firewall?

The firewall is in ok shape, but is black. I know this is a dumb question but is the firewall supposed to be black or the body color of green?

I believe it was all sprayed with the same black paint because the wiring to the windshield wiper motor is painted black, but it looks like the windshield wiper motor was taped off (not painted).

Thanks!

I don't know the GM color, but it is a cross of a deep blue/dark gray color. I can even see the outline of the yellow factory writing on the firewall.

Like 17again said...lacquer thinner. I would put it in a paint gun and blow it on there with air.

So you're not trying to smooth the firewall, just cleaning and painting it?

I am not doing anything to the firewall, it is the brake booster and resevoir that were painted black. Just wanted to know why someone would do that and how to get it off. I'll try the laquer thinner and see how that works.

Thanks!
