: Paint Matching new hood and sport mirrors

Hi, I know really know nothing about paint. I want to replace my current hood and the sport mirrors that are currently on my 66. So, I need to paint match them. its a fairly new paint job and it has been garaged since it was painted so I don't think there is a terrible amount of fading.

I want to try doing it myself. The previous owner said its a basecoat clearcoat urethane (I don't think he really knows though, nice guy but not too swift on the mechanics) It doesn't look like it has a clear coat on it though. He had the paint codes listed under the console lid.

92 GM Torch Red
Code 70
PPG 4230

Can anyone tell what type of paint it is by these codes? Does anyone have any suggestions on how to procede?

Thanks!

Well, an easy way to determine if it is cleared or not, would be to sand a spot on the old hood, or mirror. If it sands white, it's cleared. If it sands red, it's not. The mirrors won't be qiute as critical on the color match, but if it were me, I'd go ahead and blend the fenders.

You have the paint manufacture, PPG, the formula number 4230 (though that seems a little too small a number) I say GO GET THE PPG. There is no reason to even think about it, get the same formula mixed by your local PPG jobber and spray out the color onto a spray out card to see how close it is. The Formula number should tell you if it is a BC/CC or SS.

As I remember that color is solid red right? No metallic? If it is you could very likely keep it on the hood and not go into the fenders.

Thanks Martinsr, Its a solid color. Just now digging through some old email the Previous Owner sent me he said that it was PPG Deltron Eurethane so I will see where I can get with that.

The new hood will need some body work so I will need to primer it. What type of primer, body filler and glaze should I use with PPG Deltron Eurethane so I don't look like a total idiot when I talk to the autobody supply guy?

Thanks!

this may not work, but my local PPG guy has a device he can set on your car and it can analyze the current paint color so they can custom blend the color. I have even been able to match faded colors on my buddies 57 using this system.

PPG has a four digit code for their paint so the 4230 could be right.

If the paint is fairly new then its probably DCC single stage, which is a top quality paint.

Just use regular quality fillers and primers for this paint. For a filler something from Evercoat like rage or rage gold. For primer use a self etching primer on bare metal like DX1791.
If the jobber suggests DPLF epoxy on bare metal ask to see the LASTEST tech on DPLF it says the use of etch primer is required!!!

For a filling primer the type you block sand and block sand use K38 or NCP271, stay away from K36 it sucks.
