I'm trying to get my holley tuned in.I've doing some things that you guys here recommend.I've changed power valves a couple of times and now I'm trying to tackle the richness smell. The sec butterflies do not have a slot that can be covered like the primaries do?They have more of a little hole?Is there any certain position they should be in?Would this make the car idle rougher than normal if it isn't right? Also does the power valve have any affect on the a/f screws?

The secondaries don't have an idle circuit. You can only adjust for more or less air. The default setting is 'just' off of seating, to prevent them from sticking. After all else fails, you can use them to set the idle mixture by allowing more air and closing down the fronts to regulate the fuel at idle. If this ratio was off too far, yes it could affect idle quality. The power valve has no effect on idle. (Some have a 4 corner idle system, everything changes then. You can identify this by the carb having the small mixture screws for all 4 barrels.) You should be able to make the engine stumble with any one of the mixture screws. Once you get to that point the rest is easy. You could start by very slightly opening the rear butterflies and lowering the front idle speed screw. As you do this, the mixture screws will become more sensitive. Don't get carried away, a little makes a lot of difference.

Ok,Thanks.Mine only has the front idle mixture not the four corner. So the screw should just be touching the sec arm, correct? Can these be adjusted while on the car?

I believe the "correct" adjustment is to have the screw JUST TOUCH the secondary shaft, then give it 1/4 turn more to open them up just a little. Not only does it keep it from sticking shut, it also bleeds in some of the fuel from the secondaries... that way the fuel won't get stale.

I may have linked to this before, don't recall...

The Holley links have all the spec's if you look...

Ok thanks for the info guys.I got the carb off again.I just can't seem to get it to idle like it should.I tore the front bowl all the way down last night, cleaned the needle assembly.I did find that the float was sticking a little.Anything alse I should look for, take apart?Should I take the back bowl off.The motor itself runs good and strong and has good response, even in 4th gear doing about 55.I might try the sec throttle plate screw again.May be turn it a litte more one way or the other. It also seemed to run better with the 4.5pv in it and wasn't as rich(I'm trying to eliminate the richness smell).I didn't have any trouble until I messed with the sec screw and changed the pv to a 6.5.
