: Proper name for a SB SS converted to BB
72ElCaminoSS Dec 10th, 04, 1:06 PM Here's an interesting thought, my Elky is an original SS 350. I'm building a 454 for it. So, what doi I call it? It's not really an SS 454? Is it? It's not numbers matching. But, it's only half cloned smile.gif (The SS is real, the 454 is cloned!)
Of course, without the build sheet, I can't even prove it's a real SS. But, if it's not, someone went to alot of trouble many years ago to make it an exact clone smile.gif
Dan Orgill Dec 10th, 04, 1:39 PM Call it exactly what it says in your signature, minus the brackets.
DUKE 69 Dec 10th, 04, 1:46 PM My "new" car? Faster? My "Frank Sinatra Car"-I did it MY way!
lt4xtreme Dec 10th, 04, 3:19 PM Red headed ba$tard stepchild! Ha Ha Just kidding and couldn't resist. That's a good question. I normally don't have a problem with people calling it what it is now (1972 El Camino SS 454) because 90% of the people don't know and don't care. If your talking to a car guy that cares the swap usually gets covered in the conversation. The only times it's a problem is if you are trying to sell it and pass it off as a true 454 SS but as long as the swap is covered in the description it's fine.
gigem Dec 10th, 04, 3:51 PM I'm in the same boat. See my sig for what I call mine.
When people ask me "is it real?", I say "yes, but it doesn't have the original motor". I make the assumption that they are just asking me if it's a real SS...
GRN69CHV Dec 10th, 04, 3:55 PM Gigem said it correctly - a SS Car is still a SS Car. SS was an option package as were the big block motors.
LeoP Dec 10th, 04, 4:54 PM Conversion?
ak69 Dec 10th, 04, 6:11 PM SS.........-S.orta S.low-
RedSS454 Dec 10th, 04, 6:43 PM Sleeper! Keep the 350 badges (were there 350 badges on an SS350?) if there were, and when you pop the hood, its a 454. If there are no badges, just the SS, call it a true SS. Half the people would have no idea if it was an SS350 or SS 454 just by looking at it. If they talk to you, tell them its an origonal SS 350, with a 454.

SSJeff Dec 10th, 04, 7:06 PM I kinda have the same dilemma as you...my car is a documented SS 396 and it now has a 454 in it.
I just call it a "real SS car with a 454 nom"
I'm not sure where it fits in the grand scheme of things...I just love driving it.

ac72rat Dec 10th, 04, 7:37 PM Easy--- Now you all have non matching number cars
however if that was important to you,,,, you would not have changed (improved) them. Right???

Chris </font>[/QUOTE]Actually, SS 350's just have the SS, with no engine size attached. I'm definitely putting the 454 badges on it though (after all, they're going to end up costing me about $7000 smile.gif )
Thad Dec 10th, 04, 9:03 PM I'm calling my 72-SS, (formerly 350) my 72-SS, and after I show them the tail lights, I'm calling it my 72-SS-502. tongue.gif
I plan on no emblems, to keep them guessing. :D
dsr Dec 10th, 04, 11:41 PM My '64 Malibu 283 has a 454, I have just the G.M. cross flags on the front frenders with no engine size. Most people think it's a 327 or 283 and that's fine, I like the sleeper approach. Dave

tm53chev Dec 11th, 04, 9:08 AM My 65 had a 427 installed and pulled out before I got it, I have a stroked 350/377 sbc to install in it some day soon!! My 64 was a 396 car when I got it but I have a 406sbc ready to install back in it. Both these cars were originally SBC cars that someone changed to BB's and now I'm changing them back.

Billy Dec 11th, 04, 1:19 PM I call mine exactly what it is now. 70-SS-454. After several thousand dollars I figure I'll call it whatever makes me happy. I know that some folks here will get thier panties in a knot because it is a clone. But you know what? I spent all that money and two years of my time to make me happy not them.
I'm real happy now when that 468 fires up!
If someone asks me if it is real, I tell them "hell yes". I then proceed to tell them what I started with and what I did to get it that way. Never met anyone who had a problem with that. If I did I would politly tell them to call thier car whatever makes them happy. That's what it's all about.........Be happy within yourself.
Billy
