: Hood Springs
cwoodman May 6th, 04, 1:07 PM I have a 70 chevelle with a bumped up, but non-SS hood. Everything worked ok until I oiled the hinges and not the springs will not hold the hood up. I had a spare set of hinges and tried the springs from that set, same effect. Where do I get the correct springs for my hood and aproximate $$.
Thanks,
Woodman
Xtreme70SS396 May 6th, 04, 1:26 PM The "bumped up" hood IS the SS hood. Functional cowl induction was an option.
The SS hoods are heavier than non-SS and they used a stronger spring - you probably have the weaker spring. I know I've seen this question before, a quick search and you should find the part# you need - they can't be that expensive.
elcamino72 May 6th, 04, 4:16 PM The springs are still availible through GM, the part number is 3848272. They list for $13.69 each.
Joey-T May 6th, 04, 4:26 PM elcamino72, that part number is for the cowl hood springs, right?
Would those springs be too stiff or cause problems if used with a flat hood? I have a flat hood at the moment, but I plan on going with a cowl hood sometime this summer. I only want to go through the hinges once, so if they'd be OK with a flat hood for a while, I'll just go that route.
cwoodman May 6th, 04, 4:58 PM Thanks for the info, it is a pain to hold up the hood with a broom handle and it doesn't help the paint either.

elcamino72 May 6th, 04, 5:10 PM Yes, those are for the SS style hood.
cwoodman May 7th, 04, 12:16 PM I thought of this on the way home last night, does the SS and flat hoods use the same hinges with different springs or are the hinges different also?
Thanks,
Woodman
elcamino72 May 7th, 04, 4:41 PM Just different springs
cwoodman May 10th, 04, 8:14 AM Thanks for all your help elcamino72, I will get some of the correct springs on order.

ss-Dale May 10th, 04, 10:51 AM I had the same problem with my 68 - after oiling the hinges. A can of brake clean removed the oil and restored the 'friction' required to keep the hood up. My only worry was the wear on the joints without some lube.
I might even suggest a trip to the hardware store to put a smaller set of springs inside the existing hood springs while you find a better solution to the broomstick.
