ACES-70 Nov 26th, 03, 7:41 AM Well heres one for the books and its all true,,, Back in Sept of 1969 I finally got hired in at Pontiac Motors in Pontiac Michigan,, i had worked just long enough to get into the union,, decided with my new benifits I was gunna buy me a new car,,,a fast one,, I was driving a 66 Impala 396 car with a factory 4 speed I had had for a year or so,, went down to Mathews hargraves Chevrolet (close to the plant) there on the Floor was a 1970 Chevelle 454(LS-6) 4 speed car,, Gold in color really wanted a Black one but the salesman xplained this was a very limited production car and would have to take wat they had or buy a 396 they had several of those,,,,so not having a clue back then I hooked up on the car with my GM employee discount it was 2600 plus my trade,,I wasnt that crazy about the color or the bench seat but it was fast,,,thought there was sumtin wrong with the tranni cause it made way to much noise but the salesman told me it was a rock crusher and we let it go at that redface.gif ) (did I mention I was 1-A ?? in the draft?? ) so I drove this car outta there and headed off to work,, that nite we hit Woodward alittle after midnite,,(3rd shift) and the rest u all can figure out,, here is the wierd twist,,141 days later,, Im in the military,, back then if you had a military commitment and a GMAC loan there was a give it back policy with no strings attached,, so I had no choice,, I was goin over seas,,so I turned it in,,, 3 days later a distant friend of mine( 5 or 6 years older than I) goes to Dick Morris Chevrolet in Walled Lake Michigan and buys the car,,, they must have bought it from GMAC,,,,he still has the car to this day,, I have tried at least 50 times to buy it back but its not for sale,,,,I have finally just this week replaced the car, after years of buying and selling and building, not the original,, but one I would have liked better anyways,,,, I still have the window sticker,,owners manual and warr book complete with pro tec to plate for his car,,, I will not give him the paper work and he will not sell me the car smile.gif its been goin on since 1977 when I got out of the service and came home I know wat your thinkin,, Im not that big of a jerk I had sent him copys of everything so he could have the stuff,,,,,, I have just this week wrote him a nice letter and sent him all the original documents to the car,,,we have laughed about this for years him and I ,,I always call him on xmas eve and try and buy the car,,, its been an ongoing thing for 26 years,,, he called me when I sent hin the stuff and thanked me,,, and told me the car was mine in the will smile.gif and asked if I was still gunna call him xmas eve, this concerned him that I may stop calling we usually talk for an hour or so,,, this old car has brought us very close,,, smile.gif thought I would share the story again I did back in 96 or so with Al when this site first fired up,,
MikeH Nov 26th, 03, 11:26 AM Heres one that still turns my stomach. 3 0r 4 years ago I had just purchased my 69 convertible project and I was working as a field tech, meaninig I drove around the service area from site to site (lots of windshield time) anyway I pass by a hole in the wall car lot. you know, the ones who advertise "you work, you ride" type deals. anyway setting on the lot is a blue 66 SS. I u turn and go back to check it out. It is a blue/on blue 66 ss that looks like a clean older restoration. It has the 4 speed, bench seats, knee knocker tac, etc. I pop the hood and there is a 375 HP sticker on the breather. Im thinking is this an L78?? probably not but I ask the salesman/owner when he comes out is it numbers matching? and he says what is numbers matching? I ask is it the original engine and he says he doesnt know it was his uncles and he had recently died so he was selling it for his aunt. I run the numbers on the block and sure enough its matching numbers L78 w/muncie m22. He wanted 10,500 but said it was negotiable. I waited for a few days thinking about what to do since I already had the ragtop and was knee-deep in a frame-off. I finally decided to buy it and went back and he had sold it that morning. graemlins/sad.gif

CA Elky Nov 26th, 03, 4:23 PM I agree with Gumball...once my beast comes out of the shop for mouldings, I will be rompin' around no matter what the weather.
But...I was driving home from work (a whole whopping 2 miles) and for some reason everyone and their mother was (a) on the road, and (b) driving retarded.
I started driving obnoxious, weaving in and out of street traffic, excessive speed, etc, and I hit this one opening in traffic. So I'm doing 70 in a 40  and I pull into the left turn lane, make a left, start heading down the last street home, and everyone coming out of this church couldn't decide what they were doing. I started yelling.
I'm a whole block from home and I pull up to my last street light. Light turns green, I mash the gas, chirp second, then let off.
Then there was light....
The cop came to the passenger side, I leaned over, unlocked and opened the door.
There I was, in a full-on suit and heels, stockings and all....
"I didn't know you were driving this car. I thought it was some punk kind!" The officer said.
"Yeah...well...I'm old enough to know better."

Needless to say I was in traffic school 3 months later.... graemlins/angry.gif

I swear when I retire, I'm gonna move somewhere I can drive one of my fun cars everyday. graemlins/sad.gif
Back in the summer of 85, I had the 68 Malibu in my sig. My car had a stock rebuilt 300hp 327, and the night before my brother Scott, and me had switched rearend in my car, from a 3.08 10 bolt to a 3.90 geared 12 bolt. Spent the wee hours that night burning the tires all over the place. (We were young and stupid)
My bud Roy had a Blue 71 Chevelle, pretty rough, but it had a four speed, and a 402 out of something. So Roy was seeing this girl from another high school, where the kids all had money.
Roy calls up, "hey my car shut off, and can you and Scott come help me ?".
So off we go, to rescue Roy.
We get there Scott starts attaching the jumpers, when out of a side street, come this aqua color, 68 Charger, sounding pretty nasty. The driver is older than us, at least 20 something, but he lays down these 75 foot long burn out marks.
Scott was at this time totaly Chevy. Didn't like Fords, Mopars, or anything without a bowtie.
He jumps out between the black marks, and does this, "I'm not impressed dance".
Anyway, Charger dude finds a way around , and from across the street says "You want to run that blue P.O.S. if you can get it running ?".
Scott says "We'l run you with the white one". (Mine)
I say "Scotty I don't want to run this guy".
Scott says "Well can I ?" I say "go ahead".
(What was I gonna say, he did almost all the work the night before, and he owned the car before I did, and let me drive it when it was his.)
Anyway, that Charger walked away from my little 327. Rumor was that it was a hemi car, but I never saw it again.
Oh course this rumor came from most of my idiot buddies whose cars, I had already smoked.
Back in 85 that little 327 managed to humble quite a few IROC camaros, and GT mustangs.

71350SS Nov 27th, 03, 12:57 PM Back in the late 70's I had a 69 Chevelle ss.I had just picked up some parts at the local speed shop and as I was walking to where my car was parked I see the local beat cop walking towards me.Well I was partially parked in the yellow zone and figured he,s gonna write me a parking ticket.
So he circles the car looking at it and I'm thinking "oh crap here we go" then he asks how long did I own the car.I told him about a year and he says that his brother was the original owner of My car. We talked awhile, he told how his bro beat the snot out of the car, that the dealer had to warranty the OE engine, also about the car getting hit in the right front fender, that helped answer a couple things I was wondering about the car.

SS454MIKE Dec 1st, 03, 9:26 AM Back in 1967 I was graduating from High School in Crystal Springs, Ms. My good friend had received a full scholarship to go to Univ Of Missisippi. His father, no longer on the line for school expenses told him he would buy him a car. We all wanted a 67 Chevelle SS and my friend was no different. Knowing his son's penchant for fast driving, his father told him "No 396 engines, no 4 speed transmissions, no bucket seats-no hot rod for you!" Well old Roger went to the local Chev dealer and ordered a 67 Chevelle Malibu. He was surprised at all the options available. He ender up with a 327 engine that had, I think 350 HP. I remember that it came stock with a high rise aluminum intake. He got a 3 speed trans that was on the floor. This car would take most 396 cars in those days. Roger's father thought he had prevented his son from getting a hot rod car but his plan failed. We spent the next several years street racing and having a real big time
willgillespie Jan 3rd, 07, 8:06 PM Since I first got into cars I have wanted a Chevelle, particularly the 1970 – 1972. When I was 14 I started looking into cars that I could afford and build up, the choice was rather limited (I am from a small town in Arizona). I ended up scoring a clean 62 Chevy II SS, but was never really satisfied with it (or any other car I had in my early years). I recall a White Chevelle always racing around town when I was young and thinking “man that is exactly what I want!” fast forward 15 years I am now the owner of that exact Chevelle, granted the engine was blown years ago and it has been sitting for at least 6 years, but I am still the owner of the first car I ever fantasized about, now to bring it back to its glory…

mike pratola Mar 1st, 07, 12:36 AM Not a Chevelle story, but it has a Chevy in it-
When we were teenagers my buddy Zeke's older brother had a '62 Vette he would let Zeke use. We would pile into it, two in front and two sitting on the rear deck, and go cruising in the summer, usually looking for girls and parties. One of the places to hang out was the then closest shopping mall that was about 8 miles away by back road. Kids would cruise that strip and find out what was happining and where. We had been there awhile and when we pulled out to leave Zeke let loose a little burn out . As we were waiting to pull out onto the highway the security gaurd pulls up in his little Cushman three wheeler and says "what do you call that little manuver back there?". Zeke replies " Oh, it always does that when it's cold. It's warmed up now, it won't do it. Watch" and he pulls out onto the highway and leaves the guy standing there yelling at us to come back so he can write us up.
Later that summer we were back road cruising with some fermented beverages and the guy sitting next to me on the deck says to stop so he can take a leak. It was pretty undeveloped around here then so it was no big deal. While the guy was peeing Zeke was fooling around with the radio or something and the car was slowly coasting away. The guy peeing thinks we are leaving him, zips it up and starts running for the car, and yells "whoa! Hold up!" Zeke realizes he's drifting and stops the car as the dude running up from behind takes a running dive-he sails over the trunk and winds up head first in the leg tunnel of the passenger side with his feet in the face of the guy sitting in the passenger seat. We had to pull him out by his ankles after we picked ourselves up from laughing so hard.

mn65bis Mar 2nd, 07, 12:03 AM In 1969 my neighbor got home from Viet Nam and he bought a brand new 69SS396 Chevelle 375hp 4spd bench. Lemans blue. I watched him wash the car and ran home to drag my dad over to see the car. I remember it like it was yesterday. He sold it in 1972. I bought one 30 years later and painted it lemans blue.http://http://farm1.static.flickr.com/157/373781328_f0d350b306_o.jpg

He bought a beautiful blue one and gave me a hole shot to about 80mph. The guy could pound the gears. He was quite a guy.
Daygoslow Mar 2nd, 07, 1:41 AM i lived in the same house from the time i was 7 til 16 during which time i grew from a kid interested in cars to a full blown gear-head. in grade school there was an olive green 70 malibu 307 that picked up a kid from my school everyday, and even though the car was in good shape i remember thinking damn that was the ugliest color i have ever seen on a car! once i was nearing 15 i began to contemplate what kind of car would i try to save up to buy. my first thought was a 67 camaro since my mom had one from the time she was 17 til i was almost 13 which was supposed to become mine at 16 but had to be sold a few years before when hard times were upon us. my parents warned me that i would never be able to afford the insurance on a sports car as a 16 year old male. so i asked my dad if he could think of any other cool old musclecars that werent considered sports cars, he quickly replied "chevelles". we had also had a 71 malibu while i was growing up so i decided to try to find one in my price range. well i found plenty of them but unfortunately none in my price range. one afternoon my mom called me at the house to tell me about a 70 in the paper for $2500. i said "mom, you know i want a 71......" she replied "well you could at least go look at it". so i called the number in the paper and talked to the guy about the car for a little bit. just as i was getting off the phone with the guy i asked his name. turned out he had gone to grade school with me and had bought the car only about a year before. well i went to go look at the car and ill be damned, it the was the same 70 that i had watched drive by school for years as a kid. two days later i purchased the car i hated as a kid for $1400.00.
fast forward to last year and i was at work (mechanic) when i pulled a ticket for an alignment on a 67 camaro convertible. always having wondered what had become of the one we had, i drove the car around the corner from my work to my parents house a mile away to show my dad and ask if he thought it was our old car (we sold ours in primer and this one was red). after looking the car over for a few minutes my dad said he wasnt sure but he thought that it was. i returned to work and called the phone number the customer had left on the ticket and asked the man how long he had had the car. he replied 15 years and even remembered the mans name whom he had bought it from which was my father!!!! i asked him to notify me if he was ever to sell the car for i was interested to which he replied "im sorry son but i sold it last night and am about to deliver it this afternoon" heartbroken i called my brother to bring his camera and had him snap a few shots of me with our old camaro after which i took it for a nice long "test drive" down hwy 64 and memory lane all the while feeling sad and happy that i had gotten to see the car once again.
johndobek Apr 26th, 08, 10:15 PM i almost hit a tree while rolling off a trailer with mine....
dougyfresh Jun 29th, 08, 8:27 PM I did a really supid thing with my chevelle. on like the 3rd to last day of school i had open campus so i decided to go home. when i pulled out of the parking spot one of my buds was out there so i stopped to talk to him. i told him id break em loose. so i dropped it in low pumped up the brakes and stepped on it. once i let off the brakes there i went doing 40 in the school parking lot. so i went home without a second thought. i got back to school after lunch and the principle wanted to talk with me as we were walking down the hall he said it was about an incident in the parking lot. i thought to myself oh crap.so after he tried to put me through a 20 min guilt trip where he explained that the camera saw me and he even showed me some pics. i tried to blame it on my brakes since i just replaced them. he saw right through that one and said he was gonna send it into the cops. oh how pissed i was. so i got my parking lot privledges revolked for a whole whopping 2 days. my parents surprisingly didnt care. about 2 weeks later i got a ticket which i thought was total bs since i was the only one who has ever gotten into trouble for doing a burn out in the parking lot. luckily though it was only a $156.20 fine for disorderly conduct with a motor vehicle and im happy with the fact that it was a 50 footer, and that i didnt get slapped with more fines like show of power, wreckless driving and all the other stuff they couldve gotten me for.
