I have a family and a house, and know that starting your own business can be very tough (especially anything car-related in California)... At this point in life, I won't risk my families well-being just so I can "play" at my dream-job. I know most of the cars in the shop would be my own... I'm only 17 and currently work with my dad with his plumbing/heating/AC company. I kind of want to work in a machine shop though. I plan to be an anesthesiologist though (most people go :eek: at that point), but if that falls through then I can see myself being found in a machine shop. It's migrated over the past 10 - 12 years to a Dec-Alpha talking to NT servers and PC's and we are now just going to XP and a big HP-UX box. It's susposed to be a real good unit... How is that for a career change. But hey, I trippled my money in the first 3 years. If you plan on more schooling, I don't suggest the machinist route. It is a good job and great money, but if you go to school, you can make, at least, as much and not work the odd-ball hours. At least around here the machine shops run mostly 2-3 shifts daily. Maybe because of the Compaq deal...I don't know. I've been doing system admin since 1986 (U.S. Air Force)..AT&T Unix, HP-UX. With XP, Novell, etc. they really all integrate now. We just purchased 2 new boxes this year, and just when you think you were "fast" before, wow!, thses new ones are 3-4 times faster in just a 4 year time frame. We have about 15 branches, some as far away as about 25 miles, and we are real-time...meaning you go into a branch and take out money, that transactions travels back to this ONE computer and posts... Most banks "batch" process. The vendor for our sftware supports Win2K, AIX, and HP-UX. HP-UX is for the "bigger" clients and there's hundreds of them running HP-UX, so I would say overall in the career field, there's plenty out there. I left a good contracting job as a HP-UX system Admin a few years back...good money...easy work, but was never comfortable with the whole "contract renewal" process..... wv69 Dec 11th, 03, 8:47 AM You can add me to the list of "Computer Geek". Amazingly enough I never wanted to be in sales. I served 4 years in an infantry unit in the Marine Corps and I got my undergraduate degree in Political Science. I wanted to work for the FBI, CIA, NSA, DEA ect...took a sales job while going to school at night... 10 years later here I am at 35 with my masters in Business Management working at the same company. Well, I'm currently a freshman in college. My past work experiences were..not very prestigious. Basically I work on jet engines that are used to spin a generator to produce electricity. Also I am a Boom Operator for the Nebraska Air Guard part time. In that job I refuel other airplanes, all while traveling at 300 MPH and 20,000 feet above the ground.
