I can't believe it's been 3 years since we lost Skip Cain. I didn't want this anniversary to go by without mentioning a name that helped establish this site.

RIP Skip Cain

I would like to see the name of the link changed to something like "In Memorium, Skip Cain".

"Thanks and Goodbye Skip" is okay, but a lot of people really don't understand the significance of that phrase.

Anyway, we won't forget.

Back when we first started IRC chat, we tried a thing where we had a live Q&A session with a special guest. Skip was our first special guest. He was always great to chat with.

Though I only live an hour away, I never had the chance to go visit him before his passing.

People from all around here always told me about that gorgeous '67 that they saw at many of the shows. It always seemed that those shows were going on when I was offshore.

I still miss the guy. Isn't his car somewhere around Kansas City now?

Man, I can't believe I've been on this board for that long now. Yes, time flies right on by. I just wish all had been here to share it. I bet he did a huuuuge burnout up there when he read this.....

Justin, I think Brian left us just a little bit ago, less than a year.

Chad, I think, well heck it may have been Alan F that told me the car was in Kentucky! I kinda hoped we could get ahold of the owner and get it down to CB03.

And Alan, Nick is right, it soon will be or is the 4th year. I bought Old Red in 1999, just after seeing Skip's tripower car.

Oct. 26th, 01 if I remember correctly. I gota call his wife and say hello, I havent spoken with her in awhile.

I never had a chance to speak with Skip but his write ups are what led me to TC. Took me awhile to find the BB but have read and archived all that Skip wrote as well as what you guys have said about him and everything related to him on TC. I never knew him but I still miss the man.

I used to correspond with Skip years ago. He seemed like a really nice, knowledgable guy. His '67 was absolutely gorgeous! He even remembered a posting I made regarding some side moldings for my '67 Malibu. He wrote me and ended up sending me the parts for only the cost of shipping! He had been sharing stories from back in the day about his original '67 L78 racing a Hemi Road Runner just before he was drafted. I was hoping to meet Skip someday. I retrospect I think he was just getting his house in order because he knew his fate. I was stunned when I learned about it.
Also Brian's (Sasquatch) passing was especially tragic. He had a lot of enthusiasm based on what I saw of his postings, plus he kept us all posted on his wedding plans. How sad that he was taken from us too soon. His poor newlywed bride!

Thanks for posting the note about Skip.

I went digging in the archives I have and re-read a lot of posts that Skip participated in. I'm posting a few here (not in any order) for sharing.

One thing that stood out during my reading is many of the 1st responses to questions were by Skip.

Enjoy, I did....

Subject: Hood misalignment-Skip?

Reply:
Rich,
Adjusting the hood involves adjusting the radiator support, fenders and a few other steps. First, the radiator support must be at the right height(bushings) as well as centered. The bottoms of the fenders need to be properly shimmed, as well as the front to rear gap adjustments. Once the fenders are aligned properly, the hood should fit better, but hoods do tend to "bow" over the years from repeated opening and closing. Also don't align the fenders to the doors. The doors have to be adjusted so that the gap and height is even with the quarter panels. A lot of factors are involved here. Worn or missing body bushings will throw everything off, as will a rusty or sagging frame or radiator support. It takes a little experience to align everything up to "spec," and that's on condition the frame and bushings are good. By the way, factory specs on these front end gaps are plus or minus 1/8", so you won't be rolling any ball bearings along these gaps.

Luis,
Years ago, when we first started over restoring our Chevelles, a guy I knew had a very original unmolested, documented 66 Chevelle SS. A numeral "11" was inscribed in what appeared to be very faded white chalk on the firewall right over the transmission hump. We didn't know what it meant, but while restoring the car, we diligently replaced it just as it was, from a tracing we had made.A few months later, at a national Chevelle show, I was talking to a guy who was a line foreman at the Atlanta plant in the 60s and 70s. I asked him about the numeral "11" that we had seen and duplicated. He began to laugh, and told me it was "Joe" telling "Bob"(down the line) what time he was going to lunch.Ever since then I haven't taken all these markings so seriously.

Yung,
I'm one of those "old guys" who bought a new 67 SS right after graduating from high school. Back then we did everything we could to make the car "unstock." That was the big question, "Is it stock?" you did not want to say yes. If memory serves(this was 31 years ago) the first thing to go were the "granny caps" as we called them. Most of us ordered our cars with no fancy or power robbing options, so mine came with the standard hub or granny caps. A lot of guys bought the Crager mags, but I wanted the "sleeper" look. A lot of guys had decals plastered all over, but I didn't want to advertise, I liked the "sleeper" aspect. The standard SS vinyl tape stripes were the next to go. I peeled those off within a week. I also blacked out the front grill, like the 66 SS.The bottoms of the inner fenders were painted red, like the GTOs, because it looked cool.A week later I repainted them black, because everybody had them. The exhaust manifolds went next, replaced by 2" Hooker Headers. The Muncie 4 speed shifter linkage was then replaced by a Hurst Competion Plus shifter.Stewart warner oil pressure and water temp gauges were installed, as well as a Sun Super Tach on the steering column. At this point the car was about a month old, and well broken in. The stock single point distributor was replaced by a Mallory dual point unit with mechanical advance. I also converted the Holley to mechanical secondaries.By then the stock Firestone redlines on the rear had to be replaced by a set of Mickey Thompson Cheater slicks. I remember very well driving in the rain with those. Now the car definately didn't look stock, so it was time for it to not run stock. The stock L78 cam was replaced by the new GM L88 cam. I remember my dad coming home from work while I was in the middle of this. He was upset because I "ruined the warrenty" and then it was "it's not running right, the idle is worse than it was."To me it was running just fine, but a few more modifications were needed. The stock 780 CFM Holley was replaced by the new 900 CFM Holley three barrel with mechanical secondary.I remember having to grind out the divided plenum for that big 3rd barrel secondary clearance.
I find it very ironic that 30 years later, I'm trying to find all those parts that were discarded back then, for the stock or original look.Other things for that era a lot of guys had was the blue window spray can tint(never liked that myself),reverbs(anybody remember those) red or "blacklight" dome lamp bulbs and hidden aftermarket 8 track tape players. (I had mine in the glovebox.)

Dave,
OK, a couple of "Skip's tips". As a judging "captain" for NCOA, I always scrutinize the engine compartment first. Dirt and grease are a definate points deduction, as is any rust on a "restored" class car.Judges don't like seeing rusty exhaust manifolds, so use some gray exhaust manifold paint. Also, make sure the engine compartment is clean and has no water spots. Fresh engine compartment paint helps too, I like to see it "shine." A good tip for faded and dull engine compartments is to spray some engine "gloss" spray over the engine compartment after it has been degreased and washed and dried. This dries to a clear "factory new" appearance and will enhance the shine and brillance to the underhood compartment, including hoses, wiring and plastic parts. A lot of people showing older restored cars use it. Give it a couple of hours to dry.Girot's Garage(800-345-5789) have the best, #20236 at $9.95 for a 10.14 oz spray can.Bodywork is another matter. Depending on the color of your car, (darker shows up more)is what the judges will see. Polishing the car with a premium polish such as Meguiars #7 hand rubbed glaze, followed by #9 swirl remover and lastly # 26 yellow wax will help. Of course there is no substitute for good bodywork and paint, but these products will help "deflect" any imperfections. Some judges "see" more than others, your objective here is to dazzle them with brillance. Good luck.

OK, this isn't a technical question, but it's the only way I can thank all of you.No way I can individually respond to everyone's well wishes.I'm blown away guys, I mean totally overwhelmed by all the support and well wishes from all of you. I want you to know that it is sincerely appreciated, and makes me feel as good as cruising in my Chevelle (maybe a couple of weeks before I get to do that) I am recovering quickly, and feeling much better. I hope to be back full time for July tech. You guys are the best, and it makes me proud to be associated with the best Chevelle site and people on the web. Thanks again to all.

Hey Skip, er I mean Al http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif, I cant seem to find that original "SS 427" discussion of Skip's. I know I used to be able to dial that right up by using SS 427 and Skip Cain.

Maybe its me? There's a few SS 427 threads going on and I was trying to locate Skip's comments. Man, I know they be here somewhere...

Maybe we can put together a place for skip's threads huh?

Defiantly bring back some memories. I can remember when I first started coming to Team Chevelle. I was 15 and it was 1997, I had just purchased my 1972 El Camino and I can still remember looking at Skip's Chevelle and just reading as much as I could from Skip and all the other orginal guys. Thanks for the posts Al! Skip is surely missed, he is held in high regard with just about everyone that ever knew him.

Skip is missed, but certainly not forgotten.
