View Full Version : Pet peeve ..........
BillK Dec 8th, 02, 10:15 PM Lets see....we are at the local cruise and I walk up to a couple of guys I know. They are talking to someone I have never met before. So....how am I introduced.. hey Bill, meet 49FordFE428 ??? NOT !
Why is it that about 70% of you guys here on line are ashamed of your real names ??? I dont mind you having a nickname as your user name, but how about a real name in your "signature" ? I personally like to know who I am talking to by thier real names.
Just had to rant....

John_Muha Dec 8th, 02, 10:38 PM Bill, it's how some feel comfortable on the net. Remember here we aren't going to kick the door down unless you decide to cheat someone. My name's out there along with the city and main email address. I don't bother with the @chevelles address stuff. However, check my profile. Ain't nothing there. Cars I have, not a listing. It's whatever makes one happy.

BillK Dec 8th, 02, 10:47 PM John,
I dont want any personal info...just would like to see at least a first name at the end of each post. Yours is obvious, others are not. If you were calling a manufacturers tech line for help, would you not use at least your first name ?? Just common courtesy in my obviously old fashioned opinion.

66 MYSTERY CHEVELLE Dec 8th, 02, 11:32 PM Ditto Bill!
I have no problem with people wanting to use a USERNAME, but why is it so hard to just place your name at the end of a post? When I address someone with an answer to a question, and esp. if it's been one of those back and forth posts....I like to address by a name., common courtesy for me. Take it a step further and you should see some of the many personal e-mails I get, no doubt from folks who see me post a reply here.......now there's my pet peeve!!! "Hi, can you tell me what the correct antenna is for my 66 SS?" signed with some USERNAME or just "Bob" or something...Those usually don't get a response from me....TELL ME WHO YOU ARE, and maybe even try saying Please or Thank you!

ss3964spd Dec 9th, 02, 8:52 AM I hear ya Bill, and your pet peeve has become one of my own.
Like Jim said, UN's offer some anonymity here online and allow people to - how shall I say it, "hide" behind their computer screen. Some folks say things online that they would never say in person.
Then there's Crowns' peeve - folks failing at a most basic common courtesy; offering a single word of gratitude or acknowledgement for one's efforts. Drives me nuts.

I do hear you, Bill. Sometimes I get e-mail from members and don't quite know how to address them since I don't know who it is that I'm talking to (don't get me wrong, I don't mind e-mails!). Sometimes at a Chevelle meet I actually like to know a person's user handle so I can associate them with the real live person. Yes, in these modern times it is all too easy to remember one's social graces, but I'm still old school (not sliderule old though). The thing about a message board is that it offers a veneer of anonimity (a determined individual can find out lots though).

Rick_Nelson Dec 9th, 02, 1:52 PM I must admit, it would make my job a lot easier if I knew when someone sent me an e-mail that they not only included their name but their TC sign on. So often, I may answer a question differently or more thoroughly if I knew who I was talking to.

Rocks and hard places. It was also asked a couple of months back that we not use our signature in every post as it slows things down. What to do?
I figure i'll just respond like this "Hey you" or "hey pal" or if I meet someone in person i'll just forever call them 70396ss454ellesix4spd12boltposicrnberryred11secmal ibuprotouring and never call them by their real name. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/wink.gif http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif

cjlandry Dec 9th, 02, 2:46 PM My original online screen name was Ramrod. That's the handle my old biker buds used to call me by (My best friends wife hung the handle on me and it stuck).
Then I took the name Warlord on IRC. Someone in the TC chat remembered me by that name a few nights ago. It's always nice when someone pops in and remembers the original chats.
Although half the people from TC call me "CJ", I normally just go by Chad.
I agree it's nice to have a first name to call people by. Some usernames are just too difficult to type.
BTW, I answer to any of the above.

If you look at my nic. you could figure out real quick where it came from. I have ben called Wiljam at the local airport sence I was a kid and that is the nic I always use on the net. My name is William Tinsley, with that and the location on my profile you got all the info you could get from a phone book. No, I am not parinoid.

I also agree... Hence why I use a signature and use the handle I do... If you've ever met my family we all will respond to "FIG" and most know me by J.J. that's what I get for being John Jr.

Glenn1018 Dec 9th, 02, 6:23 PM I think y'all can guess my name.
Within the last few months I've found a new pet peeve since that bastid yelling "tada DUMP tada DUMP tada DUMP DUMP DUMP" finally got canned, and it's phone commercials. The latest strain of nausea goes "you local...and your wireless...all together...on one-bill...all right there...for no extra charge...one less bill to pay..." You know the voice...and meanwhile they're showing 3 could be models jumping around in slow motion like they're weightless waving their arms and smiling ear to ear because they can talk a couple minutes more every month since they only have to write one check instead of two. And that's just one of many commercials.

My screen name is my initials. It's not very creative, but I wasn't thinking creative when I picked it. I was thinking "what could I put in that would be really easy and short to type in all the time?" It's boring, but it works.
Some length of time after that I stuck my first name in my sig. I don't remember why. Guess it just seemed like the thing to do.

zombie1974 Dec 11th, 02, 6:23 PM Not paranoid, I've used this username for everything since the mid nineties.
I hated my first name when I was young, got me into a lot of fights. Now I'm proud of it.
Maurice
Not Mo,
Not Morris,
Not Murray -
Maurice!
and yes, I am the space cowboy and the gangster of love.
My take on the username/realname issue is if someone is asking for help it's nice to know who they are. Many replies work fine with whatever username someone chose and are comfortable with.
I suppose my pet peeve is receiving a bunch of email asking for specific or comprehensive help and when I hit 'reply' the only thing I can do is type "Hi.." because the person never did the courtesy of introducing themselves.
I agree with Dennis, I'd miss Bill asking them to post their real name http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif
slowtalker Dec 12th, 02, 10:22 AM I've been slowtalker..ing on the net since the net was invented by Al Gore http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif. Down south here, we are often accused of having some sort of accent. That together with the thought that it is better to listen than speak makes up the moniker. Though this will reveal my secret identity, my sig has been modified for your viewing pleasure http://www.chevelles.com/forum/wink.gif.

Jimmy P Dec 12th, 02, 10:49 AM Bill, even if you signed your last name I still couldn't pronounce it! http://www.gamers-forums.com/smilies/contrib/blackeye/hihi.gif Just kidding. I agree with you whole heartedly. Especially since we've all 'known' each other for quite some time, it's sometimes awkward when you do meet in real life.
Here are the top ten reasons folks don't use their real name as a handle are:
10. Old 'CB' guys still like making up weird names for themselves.
9. Can't remeber their real names when signing on.
8. When they come to the board for the first time and see a really cool handle like, '427L88' and they just can't help themselves.
7. They're a real Smart-@$$ in real life and it just carrys over onto the internet.
6. They're running from the FBI and want to conceal their idenity.
5. BBMike E-mails them their new handles before signing in. (He's the guy who's really running this site. Al is just a front man)
4. Afraid of being known by name for asking a stupid question.
3. Breathing too many exhaust fumes or putting octane booster in their breakfast coffee.
2. Being able to exagerate about their Chevelle's performance. Or, maybe they don't even actually have one when they say they do.
1. So they can talk about their wives without being traced.
Discalimer: this list was compiled for amusement only. Not meant to offend anyone. If I did, I apologize profusely. Even more than Trent Lott. http://www.gamers-forums.com/smilies/contrib/geno/rofl.gif
Luis Dec 12th, 02, 11:40 AM No doubt as to who I am with my user name. My pet peeve is when some one asks for help and you do some research for them, then they never say THANK YOU. You don't even know if they read your reply.

Dear Abby, Dear Abby,
Well I never thought
That me and my girlfriend would ever get caught

With her hair up in curlers and her pants to her knees

Interesting what happens when you start to see names. Tim, you originally from Monrovia? seems I remember a guy by that name from the old 'hood.
As for the names, I just call everyone Dude. It is easier to remember one name than 50.
