View Full Version : Does oringial color (not paint) affect value to you ?

I was just thinking about painting my car.
The original color code is for two tone teal. (UGH!)
I think I'd like all dark teal, or LeMans Blue (same as my vette), but 2 cars the same color seems kind of goofy.
And I always thought the racer's red 68 with the white stripe was about the nicest color sceme I've ever seen on a 68. But I wouldn't want to look like I was copying.
Heck the more than 15 year old graphite gray/metalic black doesn't look that bad either.

So my question is: If its not the original paint, does it make any sense, to repaint the original color ?
Even if a stock appearing restoration is your goal ?

I would paint it any of the stock color choice/combinations of that year. That would be a great stock "looking" restoration IMHO.

It really depends on the car. If the car's set up for racing then an aggressive color but for cruising around/daily driving the stock color (I don't think teal's half bad)or one off the factory palette would be fine.
Red and blue seem to be the most overused colors. I think tripoli turqoise (with a white vinyl top maybe) looks best on a 1968 model.
I don't think it affects value unless the car's all original. My Dad's '68 Corvette was originally Corvette Bronze and is now black. It also doesn't have the original engine or tranny as well as bunch of other parts such as aftermarket sidepipes so it can pull off the black color well. Now if a car was a gold numbers matching SS with all the original parts and just needing a paintjob and someone painted it '98 Dodge Neon blue or something, then yes that could kill the value and appeal too maybe.

My friend has two camaros....1- 1967 and 1968 the 68 is tubbed and the 67 is not. the 67 is a small block car and the 68 is a 540 car....They BOTH are the same color....Viper blue with white stripes...I dont think I would have done them both the same color ...But it looks very cool when there both out in the drive way......

I would paint it what ever color you want....It's your car.......enjoy it while you own it.......Good Luck.....

My car was gold on gold. Not my favorite at all. Dad's was maroon. Less common and it looked nice, but he wanted black too. I do like the turquoise colors though. Our wagon project was/is teal on teal and that's what it will stay.

But hey, your 68 looks good. Unless you're sick of it, keep it as is. Better yet go black with the red SS stripe. Not that I'm partial... http://www.chevelles.com/forum/wink.gif

I agree that red is over-used. If you've been to any of the all-Chevelle shows you'll see what I mean. You can't swing a dead cat without hitting a red Chevelle http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif.

My favorite factory color in 68 was Island Teal Metalic, a very light silvery blue. Check out Greg Martin's car, I think he goes by Prezgreg here on TC. Beautiful, IMO.

Thanks, and I like the color on your car.
You or at least I don't see that often.

My bud stopped by today, and said I was nuts for thinking about it. Said I drive it to much to keep a paint job nice, and the current color sceme looks "sinister".

"Sinister" Dang, I kinda like that. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif
I knew it looked mean but "sinister" ?
Its not everyday somebody says your car looks "sinister".

I guess I can live with the current combo, a little longer. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif

One of our members, Framer, has a gorgeous stock '67 SS396. The only thing is that is painted black instead of the stock colour; Mountain Green. In his case I think the value is enhanced by NOT painting it the stock colour. Another benefit in his case (hope I'm not picking on you Chuck) is that he could paint it any of the great colours offered in '67 and not be at a disadvantage by choosing Marina Blue or Maderia Maroon or Tahoe Turquoise or Butternut Yellow or... An unusual colour combo is an eye opener but it also is sometimes ugly. In these cases paint it how you like and take your lumps at judging time (Chuck, I really love your car in black vs. the original Mountain Green).

My buddy is a Porsche nut. He's told me that a 928 in Red, White, or Black will bring $3500+ more in resale than any other color. Tough, it's your car, paint it what you want.

Do what you feel like. Heres an idea: If you like gray you should try that dark grey metallic on the new dodges with black stripes or that gunmetal grey metallic on those new mustangs. Now that would be a great color combination.

sometimes going with one solid color is nice. from what iv seen, a good number of people go to repaint and use the stripes. just my thoughts

As has been said, it depends on the car and the color (not to mention the buyer). My Elky is now blue (mostly). But, I'm going to paint it back the original Midnight Bronze metallic. The color was only made in 72, it matches the cowl tag, and it looks pretty good, as it's almost black.
Teal isn't bad BTW. I'd go original if possible.
