View Full Version : All you guys with Grundy insurance read this
camcojb Apr 1st, 02, 11:33 AM If you've been following the other thread about insurance here
http://www.camaros.net/forum/Forum2/HTML/002911.html
there were some questions regarding what was covered (or not in this case). I spoke with them this morning and here's what they said.
I asked them about pleasure driving. If I want to take a drive on a Sunday up into the mountains, am I covered? Yes, as long as you don't spend the night. No overnight trips are covered. Well, there goes Power Tour.
I asked if I was allowed to drive to my buddies house to work on his 69 Camaro which is also insured through Grundy. My car is covered IF I'm taking it there to work on it. It is NOT covered if I drove it over there to work on his car.
The morning trips to the store to get money from the ATM.... NOT covered. Going to the bank? No way. And don't think of leaving it unattended at a car show (which is one of the few places it's covered). If you're off looking at the other cars and something happens to yours, not covered. Basically, 99% of the driving I've been doing the last year I've been insured through them is not covered.
I have been with Hagerty in the past; good company, only switched cause Grundy offered unlimited mileage (wonder why, you can't go anywhere!) and lower rates. I'll be calling Hagerty and K&K this morning.

Mark 502 Apr 1st, 02, 11:55 AM Jody,
I haven't had any experience with Grundy insurance but I have with Hagerty. Last year while on the way to the Super Chevy show I caught a piece of tire tread from a truck in front of me on the roof of my 65. It produced a small dent but still the entire roof would have to be repainted to fix it. Hagerty said take it to my favorite body shop and get it fixed and send them the bill. Well, the prospect of repainting the whole roof didn't thrill me so I contacted one of these small dent removal services the car dealers use and arranged to have it looked at. The removed the dent with no problem without having to touch the paint. I submitted the bill to Hagerty and had a check in less than a week with no questions asked. With that experience in mind I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them to anybody

camcojb Apr 1st, 02, 12:19 PM Update to the above. K&K Collector Car Insurance doesn't have the restrictions but only allows a max of $15K value for any 69 Camaro! So I called Hagerty, spoke with Drake, and there's no problems at my value and type of driving. So I'm switching to Hagerty.
Good luck guys and thanks!

Narti Apr 1st, 02, 8:05 PM I had a Grundy policy on my car. Changed over to Haggerty when the premium went to $400. Now I have more coverage and pay less, plus I can drive my car with no worries! http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif

Hobart Apr 1st, 02, 9:50 PM Never made a claim, but so far Hagerty is tops in my book. One of my friends had his '56 Chevy insured with them for $18,000, and it got swiped. They paid the full amount no problem. Plus, any contact I've had with them on the phone has been pleasant. No appraisal required, and you can email them pic's of your car. Good company, IMHO.

LOL!!! Priceless. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif
I too am with Hagerty. I've checked everyplace I could find that offered classic/antique insurance and nobody even comes close! Hagerty is the cheapest and have the best rules. I have also heard nothing but good when someone had to file a claim. (the whole reason for having it) Everyone said they didn't argue and had a check within a week!
Another nice thing about Hagerty's is that if you have more than one car with them, you only pay for certain items once and not for each car.

CY72SS Apr 2nd, 02, 9:55 AM I currently use Grundy Insurance. I got it based on web post of satisfied customers. I E-Mailed Grundy and asked the following questions:
I take my car out for a drive on a nice evening or weekend.......... Is it
covered?
I take my car to a local car show (at the County Park, a local High School,
GM Car dealer, etc.) .........Is is covered to/from and while there?
On the way to a car show, I stop at a resturant to eat, or gas station to
refuel .........Is it covered?
The reply from Grundy:
CY72SS Apr 2nd, 02, 9:58 AM The Reply from Grundy:
Yes, all of the items you listed are covered under your policy. If you or your friend have any further questions please feel free to call me at (800)338-4005.

camcojb Apr 2nd, 02, 12:08 PM Ask her if you can drive to a buddies house on a Sunday to b.s. or work on his car. Ask her if you can drive the car to go to the atm or to the bank to deposit a check. Ask her if you can do any overnight trip (Power Tour, Hot August Nights, etc.).
The answers to all the above will be "No". I like to drive the car some, not for business or as a daily driver, but things besides car shows. By the way, they also told me the local hamburger drive-in get together that a lot of people go to does not necessarily qualify as a car show and may not be covered. Another guy was told that the car must not be un-attended even at a show. Don't most of you go look at the other cars while you're at a car show?
Bottom line, I didn't know any of the above when I bought their policy. It had unlimited pleasure driving, and in my opinion the above things are part of pleasure driving. Can't go to a buddies house unless I'm going there to work on my car? Ridiculous in my opinion.
I'm not trying to get everyone to drop them. I just want everyone who is insured by them to know what their policies are.

My answer would have been "No Hagerty doesn't have unlimited mileage" I have the '69 insured with Hagerty and they set a limit of 4000 or 4500 miles a year. I also had to declare what percentage of dirving would go to pleasure, parade, club events/shows.
Before this starts a bigger debate what I think Hagerty does is use different companys to underwrite the policies. In other words one Hagerty policy can be very different from the next depending on who does their underwriting.

camcojb Apr 2nd, 02, 12:31 PM Okay,
I just spoke with Jennifer at Grundy (noted above). She said driving to my buddies house on a weekend to b.s., a trip to the auto parts store, overnight at Hot August Nights, etc. IS covered. Their exclusions are business related travel, trips to the grocery store for ten bags of groceries, malls for clothes shopping, etc. Anything hobby-related is covered. Getting gas for the drive, quick trip to the ATM, etc. is fine. Also the local hamburger joint car shows are covered and they have no attendance clause at all.
So, now I have to figure out what is true and what isn't. Two different people saying two different things. She is a supervisor though and trains other people there so her opinion does carry more weight.
Thanks CY72SS for the contact name.

Randy Mosier Apr 21st, 02, 1:54 PM It might depend on which state you live in because insurance lawas vary from state to state. In Texas, there is no such thing as agreed value policies because Texas doesn't allow insurance companies to sell them here. If you wreck a classic here, your troubles are only just beginning because you have to show receipts for everything to recover your losses. You just can't set a value beforehand.
Don_Lightfoot Apr 21st, 02, 2:37 PM The best advice I can give here is to get your responses in writing, don't rely on telephone enquiries.
Here in Canada we do not have the brokers you all have mentioned above but do have the same circumstances. A few years ago I was hearing the same horror stories about the broker I was using. I sent them a list of about 20 questions regarding things I do with my ride and got a "Yes" to all of them. I do use mine for pleasure cruising and visits to friends homes on occasion. I have full coverage and cheap premiums. The basic restrictions are as follows:
- maximum 15,000 kms per year.
- driver must have 10 years experience.
- cannot use for 'to and from' work, shopping, etc.
- normal secutiry precautions.
- not restricted to only shows, club events, etc.
Do your homework before a tragedy occurs.

Alex_NY Apr 21st, 02, 4:50 PM I was curious so I called a friend who has a 72 Jaguar insured. He has Hagerty.
He said that in this kind of insurance, they limit the risk of loss by covering it where the odds of loss are small to nil for a reasonable dollar. For example you must have another car that you use for driving, and the car insured is for pleasure, etc.
Your car is basically not covered if you leave it out of sight (overnight parking, etc.)
Sounds reasonable to me compared to what we pay for regular car insurance.
74BuClassic Feb 26th, 03, 9:56 AM All those companies are great -- graemlins/thumbsup.gif IF you have a garage....
If not (like me) break out that vasaline and pray for no accidents....My Bu is on my regular policy. I'm sure I'll probably get a whopping $350.00 if mine is totaled.
