View Full Version : Need help with digital pics

I'm posting this while I'm thinking about it, and not while I have all the info on hand, but here's the short of it:

I've got an iMac. A friend took a whole bunch of digital pics for me with his Nikon. He burned them all to disc. I've got the disc at home now and I can't open the pics because I'm missing some sort of Nikon program. Does that sound half right?

I guess I need to know if I can somehow convert these that I have to another format, or if I need to have him convert them before he burns another CD for me. He's pretty basic with computers, and I think it'd be easier for me to handle the conversion at my end if that's possible.

Anyone got some suggestions for me? I've got Photoshop and a couple of other more basic graphics programs, but I need some instruction as to how these might help me, if possible.

I use photoshop all day at work. I have to say it is the best image manilupation/handling program out there. It should have no problem opening those images as long as you open them the right way. I am also on a mac so it shouldn't be that much of problem for me to walk you through it.

Edit: Probably should have told you how. just a quick question what OS are you using? OSX or OS9?

Edit: If all else fail you can just email me the files and I'll convert them for you.

Okay, there's one down: I'm obviously not opening them the right way. I was just clicking on the small image and getting the error message for not finding the Nikon program.

I opened Photoshop, but couldn't figure out how to pull the image up through the program. I apologize, I'm not much with computers. If I worked with 'em more I'd probably have all the fine points nailed down.

This is a frame grab of the menu you will be using the most on this operation.

Try using the open command first if that doesn;t work try different types of files in the import selection area.

More times than not digital cameras store their images as jpegs with a special extension that only certain programs can read.

This is what the colapsed import menu looks like.

More times than not I use the "pict resource' for importing.

hoping this helps…

Wow! Thanks!

...but now I've got another problem.

When I try to open the file I get "Could not open <filename> because the scratch disks are full."

What next? Do I gotta get me some new scratch disks? How much are those things going for on eBay, and are the repros as good as the NOS ones? http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif

If his Nikon is the same as my Nikon (Coolpix 995), it will only make 2 kinds of pics .jpeg and .tif.

Both ought to open with Photoshop.

I hear there are some repro scratch disks out there that came from the former Soviet Union. Poor replicas. Make sure you stay away from those and get either NOS from an old Apple supplier or the good repros from Taiwan.

Ummm...what's a scratch disk and why are mine full?

Your scratch disk is full?

Your scratch disk (simply put) is the room your machine has to work with each file when your opening it. Like a garage, you can only fit so many other cars.

I would suggest restarting your machine opening ONLY photoshop then proceeding.

Works like this, each machine has a certain amount of RAM. Each application (programs) uses a certain amount of this RAM. The RAM is taxed by the programs and then from the file you trying to open. So if you scratch disk is full your running out of RAM.

Ram isn't to expensive but try this method firt and see what happens. If all else fail send me the files, I'll open them, resave them and email them back to you.

Hope this helps…

Finally a topic I actualy know something about http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif

Thats a good question, I dont know that one http://www.chevelles.com/forum/wink.gif

it's fine, I actually have been thinking about going back to school (never finished college) for teaching this stuff.

It's good practice for me and if I give bad advice I wont loose my job http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif

Hmmm...that doesn't sound right! I can open lots of other pictures at once with other programs running concurrently, but when I go to open any single one of these photos from the disc I have I get that "scratch disks full" error. Do I not have my memory allocated correctly?

I think when I tried it before I only had my email program running and that was it. I've already upgraded my RAM once, so I should be able to open a few pictures, right?

try dragging the files to your desktop. That might be the trick here.

If it still says that its full then it must be looking for room on the cd.
