View Full Version : Muncie parts
JON66 May 2nd, 99, 12:02 AM I was at the local tranny shop today getting my clutch adjusted and fluids checked and i asked how much it would be to replace my syncros (SP?) in my m-20. The reply really supprised me, he said they dont work on the muncies because they are too afraid to crack it open and then find other things wrong with it that they cant get parts for and have to put it back together with something still wrong. Their main problem is fear that worn syncros may have damaged other parts around it. I am not sure how this works but I thought that there are now replacement parts for the muncie that are available. Maye this shop just hasnt kept up to date with the availability of these parts. What should I do?

dude67 May 2nd, 99, 3:35 AM Jon,
You can get the rebuild kit for anywhere from $159-179 out of the major chevelle parts suppliers. This kit comes with new syncros and bearings, And any of the other parts needed can be found. It might take calling around the country and have them mail ordered in but you can find them.

DZAUTO May 3rd, 99, 6:26 AM STAN! STAN! STAN!
I hope that price included coming to your house, picking up your car, taking it to a shop that specializes in rebuilding 4sp trannies, R&R the tranny by a pro and returning the car washed, waxed and the interior vacuumed. All in the sameday!
I personally have never done business with Gearzone, but everyone so far seems to have good comments about them.
For years I have done business with Larry Fischer of D & L and he has always been helpful, correct and prompt with info and parts. I can highly recommend him.
JON66,
I will be happy to give you any info/guidence, call my at home after 5CDT, i'm always up late. Tom 405-745-8383.

$1500??????I just had my M22 rebuilt with 2 new gears and a rebuild kit(gears from D&L and kit from Gearzone)for about $650 with someone else assembling it.$1500 seems a lot steep to me.

rkenly May 9th, 99, 9:51 AM I have a '69 M21. 3rd is pretty well shot. I've gotten several folks to give me an estimate to re-build. None were under $800.
I went to a T400.
If I now had it rebuilt for let's say $800, could I re-coup my costs???

JON66 Jul 27th, 00, 6:40 PM I know this is an old post but i have a new estimate for having the M20 rebuilt. Currently the tranny has trouble when i downshift into second at normal speeds (its fine going into second) and when at the track it tends to grind when going into third at high RPM's (6-7k). All other gears are fine. Any ideas what needs to be replaced? the guy wants $900 for a rebuild. Thanks, Jon
Wally Jul 27th, 00, 6:57 PM To crack open a muncie and rebuild it with nothing but a small parts kit, $200 labor and less than 150 for a kit that includes the countershaft pin. You remove it and install it yourself.
900 to bench one is just a little steep.
By the way, Larry has a brand new in the boxes GM gear set on EBay, 850. These are NOS gears, rare stuff.
You can buy a complete after market gear set for less than 900.

rat4spd Jul 27th, 00, 7:10 PM Try nationaldrivetrain.com . I got a brand new cluster for my m20 for $275, a used I'st gear for $75. The whole rebuild with all new bearings, synchros, slider keys and springs, with gears cost me $500. I did the labor. So unless all gears are grenaded, anything over $750 for a complete rebuild is a ripoff, especially if no hardware is replaced. They are kind of a pain to take apart, but I know what went into my tranny.
Doug Garland Jul 27th, 00, 7:54 PM I would have sold you a fresh M-22 for $1400, with all new insides! Everything new!
