A friend of mine is restoring his 70 SS Camero and found a M22 rock crusher cheap,, it needs work but I have seen certain M22's going for big money on the net and was wondering were and how to read the date code on case,, are certain year M22's worth more then others?

Check the gears and make sure it really is a M22, no other way to confirm it. I must of looked dozens of muncies that were supposed to be M22s, but popping the side cover off told otherwise...

The numbers you are looking for are stamped into the passenger side of the main case, towards the rear of the front case (actually the middle of the trans)
But this will only tell you what the trans was originally, like drptop says, ya gotta pull the side cover off to be 100% sure. One good indicator, however, is an input shaft with no grooves cut across the splines.
Hey DZ- How many M20-M21 Inputs you actually ever seen with no grooves??? None for me.

If the trans needs repair, there are no new gears available for these units, for that matter any Muncie. There was 500 sets of gears made outside the US for the M-22, I have no idea how good they are or the cost. It might be a better idea to find a good M-20 or M-21, or purchase one of the Richmond units.

First of all, let me give you an example of a stamped date code on a Muncie .
P9C10 C.
P=Muncie (how the heck they get Muncie from a P I don't know)
9=1969
C=month, Mar
10=day of month
C=M-22 (A=M-20, B=M-21)
"TO THE BEST OF MY KNOWLEDGE", M-22s were 66-72 only (I just read an article about a FEW super rare M-22s for 65 396 Vettes, There was a one time run of them, about 20, we'll never see one). The 66-9 M-22s had course (10spline) input and 27spline tailshaft. And 70-2 had 26spline input and big 32spline tailshaft (turbo 400 size).
The year, after the P, and the letter code for M-20,21,22 did not get added until late 68 (before that you had to go by the year of the stamped VIN).
So, if you have a case with a C at the end of the date code (and the letter code is usually spaced differently from, and not quite in line with, the rest of the date code), that is your first clue that it is a M-22. AS STATED ABOVE--------THE ONLY, ONLY, ONLY, ONLY WAY TO TELL A M-22, IS TO REMOVE THE SIDE COVER AND LOOK AT THE ANGLE OF THE GEAR TEETH! If you don't know what that angle should look like, put an old Muncie gear in your pocket and take it with you to compare or go to Gearzone and pull up that picture and print it out.
For M-22 gears, Try Larry Fischer of D&L Transmissions or Gearzone.
If you have a broken M-22 and can't find gears, SAVE IT! KEEP LOOKING! LOOK SOME MORE! MAKE SOME CALLS! JACK UP YOUR LONG DISTANCE BILL! Or sell the worthless thing to me for $50.

I forgot to answer your question. Yes I have seen many M-20 inputs without grooves. But, only early (63-5) models. ALL M-21s I have ever seen have 1 groove or ring. Supposedly, replacement inputs from GM have no grooves. But strange as it may seem, I guess I have never bought a new input from GM, just gears and small parts (back in the 60s-70s when they were cheap). Also, I have never seen an M-22 input with any groove.
