When I went to put my axles back into my 4.10 rear end, I noticed that the spider gears had moved and that one of the spider gear shims had fallen off. How do I take the carrier apart to place the spider gear shims back on and to line everything back up with the cross shaft hole?
Can I do this myself, or should I take it to a shop who specializes in rear ends?
As far as I know, the rear end has 4.10 gears with a disc type posi carrier. Any help would be appreciated.

The shims come from behind the side gears, they drop out sometimes when you remove the pin.
Not to worry. You may need someone to assist you but it is easy. The shims are cupped, slide one between the carrier and the side gear, if it seems like it won't go rotate the side gear using one of the axles and it should go back in place, repeat for the other one. Slde the axles in place, install the C clips, push the axles back, install the pin and bolt in place.
You may feel like you need more hands, but it will work, trust me. I did ths same thing several times.

Thanks Wally..
I went out to the garage this afternoon and figured out how to do it. My main problem was that I could not rotate any of the gears. They were stuck. I had to remove the springs in the center of the carrier to move the spider gears. Once I got this loose putting the shims back behind the spider gear was pretty simple. Thanks again for you help.
buy the way. Do you happen to know what the carrier series is with a casting number of EDB30174?
Thanks again...

If there is no spacer between the ring gear and the carrier, it's a type 4, a spacer a type 3, a type 2 won't even work.
