I'm thinking of adding power steering to my 67 Chevelle SS. My altenator is on the drivers side of the engine. My question is (Do I need to move the altenator to the passenger side of the engine or can I leave it where it is and everything line up?) The engine is a 1971 402 big block.

Find the address of "Alan Grove" in a Hot Rod or Popular Hot Rodding magazine. They make all sorts of brackets for this sort of thing.
They supply the brackets that Vintage Air uses in their kits and the quality and fore-thought is great.

Bill's Hot Rod Co. makes every bracket you would need. I was impressed with their quality and service. 626-332-1915
Don't forget, 67 chevelles used a remote fill canister for the power steering pump on a fat block. This was for a reason. I've seen the complete kits for sale and might save you a ton of grief.
The alternator stays where it is. I'll have to try and get some pictures together as I have some great shots of this.

I have already found the brackets and pump . I need to know if I can add this to my car with or without moving the altenator. Thanks.

I have already found a set of big block brackets and pump. I need to know if the altenator needs to be moved. Whats this about a canister? Does this mean that not every set of big block brackets and pump will work on my 67? Thanks

First you need to determine if you have a short (68 and below) water pump/pulley set up. I would assume you do, since your Alternator is on the drivers side, but then your engine is out of a 71 (long pump setup), so I'm not a 100% sure. 68-and-below brackets are different than 69-and-up. Judgeing from your last post, I'd bet your holding a 69-and-up power steering pump and brackets, which will not work with the short pump set-up.
Here's a pic I did for a question a long time ago regarding power steering brackets and headers, but you can still see what the setup looks like:

Ok so I would have to change the water pump and move the altenator if the brackets are off of a 69 or newer big block but if I have the long set up everything will work the way it is.

True...but seeing as your alternator is on the drivers side, I would bet you have a short pump setup.
Is there not enough room on a BB under the alternator for a pump with reservoir? The small block had both on the drivers side so I thought there would be plenty of room . Did the Camaro have the remote reservoir? If not would it be possible to use brackets for the Camaro on the Chevelle? I too am in the same boat about power steering swap from SB to BB

I don't really know. I didn't know that they were different BB brackets for different years.I looked at mine and I have the short set up I think. I have only 1 fan belt and it is back groove on the crankshaft and waterpump pulleys. From what Gene told me I would have to move The altenator to the passenger side of the engine and change the water pump. Looks like there is room to add where it is now it is just a question of getting the belts to line up.
