View Full Version : Calling all 1964 Chevelles - radiator/fan clearance??

I'm working on my '64 2 dr wagon (see my webpage). It's got a 350 & TH350 in it. Although I'm still on crutches due to a knee surgery.. I can't just sit around while all of the rest of you work and play with your TOYS!! http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif

I bolted the radiator & the stock sheet metal radiator spacer (about 3" thick) in place to determine which water pump and pulley setup I could use... Long vs. Short.

The 350 had been in a '71 Malibu I sold, so I have a complete LONG style waterpump/pulley/p/steering pump & ALL the correct brackets. I bolted on the LONG waterpump and a 2" spacer with a flex fan. I've got about 1" - 1 1/2" of clearance between the radiator and the fan blade.

For those of you with '64 Chevelles/Malibus with a V-8, you know these cars didn't have a fan shroud, only the "finger guard" right in the center of the radiator.

What I want to know is "How much clearance is there on a STOCK V-8 '64 Chevelle between the radiator and the fan blade"???

I'm pretty shocked, I thought the only way I could ever use the LONG waterpump setup would be to bolt the radiator directly to the core support (eliminate the 3" spacer).

The car is modified, so I'm not after the correct look for a '64 Chevelle. Since I've ALREADY got everything for the LONG waterpump setup, that's what I'm using.

Thanks, Len

Going from memory on this, and the mind gets fuzzier as the years go by. I believe the shop manual specifies .75".

I am running a 6 blade fan, no clutch, with a 1/2" spacer and it works our just about right.

Len,

I have a ZZ4 under the hood with the long water pump that came with the engine. With the clutch fan, it was way too close to the rad. So, off with the 3" spacer and remounted it to the main support. Of course, rubber boots/insulator's were used for the vibration's. The I scored a Fibreglass repro fan shroud I believe from a 66 and bolted that up to the inner side of the rad brackets. It's nice & neat and really hauls the air through there. The Temp went down quite a bit and I feel a whole lot better about the amount of air moving through the rad.

Hope it Helps.

Thanks for the replys and well wishes. Also, any and ALL additional replys are welcome.

Canuck64ss, I am a little spooked about not running some sort of shroud. But since Chevy didn't originally, I'll give it a go, since the engine is pretty stock.

I've got a Marina Blue '67 SS396 sitting side by side with the '64 wagon. It's 396 is long gone and in it's place someone plopped in a 327.

I've been "comparing" the two. Looks like the wider '67 radiator would pretty much bolt in. The '67 radiator also has got a flange on it for the shroud.

I don't want to rob any of the unique Big Block stuff from the '67 though, I'll be putting a Big Block back into it ('67) someday.

What does a '67 Big block fan shroud look like VS. a '67 Small Block fan shroud???

Thanks guys.

Len, I've still got the L6 in my 64 and the fan is about 3/4" from the radiator and the radiator is bolted directly to the support. I may put in a 402 so I bought a 4 core that came out of a 65 1/2 ton. It mounts to the support the same and has the shroud mounting tabs on it. The only difference I see is the upper hose connection is on the drivers side which won't be a problem.

Yup, all this sounds about right. My 64 has a 283, a short water pump, the clutch fan, and about .75" clearance.
